Obedience, the first lesson for the child in spiritual knowledge. "God gives his spirit to them that obey." " To obey is better than sacrifice." I Sam. 15:22.

After hearing Moses' many laws about sacrifice and remembering that the world-thought has been filled with the belief of its necessity, even to the shedding of the blood of an innocent one for the sins of the world, it surprises us to read these words, "1 spake not to your fathers, nor commanded them concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices: but this thing commanded I them, saying, obey my voice and I will be your God and ye shall be my people, and walk ye in all the way that I have commanded you that it may be well unto you." Jer. 7:22-23, Hos. 6:6, Micah 6:6. "Go and learn what that meaneth; I will have mercy and not sacrifice." Matt. 9:13. Read Mark 12:33 and Psalms 50:9-12, and Prov. 21:3, Isa. 1:11-19. "Ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit" --- being born again by the word of God --- a spiritual awakening. I Pet. 1:2223, Heb. 5:8. "Jesus, though a son, yet learned he obedience." II Cor. 10:5. "Bringing into captivity (control) every thought to the obedience of Christ."
