THE BOOK OF RUTH.

Story of the ancestors of the royal family of Judah. It is considered an appendix to Judges. It shows the genealogy of King David through Ruth, a proselyte to the Jewish religion a preintimation of the admission of Gentiles into the Christian religion. Ruth was not of Israel.

I. Samuel gives the history of the Jewish church from the birth of Samuel to the death of Saul --- eighty years.

II. Samuel gives the history of David, second King of Israel, during forty years.

I. and II. Samuel are called, in the Vulgate, the I. and II. books of Kings, being two of the four books which give the history of the Kings of Israel. They are considered a key to the Psalms:
