THE BOOK OF PROVERBS.

Most representative specimen of the wisdom literature of the Bible. In harmony with the character of the Hebrew wisdom, which is inspired by religious motives, this book has a decidedly religious character, although we find also that many maxims have found their way into it which bear upon ordinary prudence of conduct, and are merely personal experiences.

Solomon is named as author of the Proverbs, but verse 6 appears also to announce the intention of publishing "words and riddles of the wise."

The Proverbs of Solomon form the real kernel of the book.

These "words of the wise" contain maxims and warnings which only exceptionally are comprised in a single verse; usually they extend to two, sometimes. three, once even to seven verses.

This appears to be an appendix to chapters 22:17, 24:22, headed, "These are also words of the wise."

With the heading, " These also are Proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, collected." 25:1. Here again, as a rule, each verse makes up a proverb. (Chaps. 28, 29.)
