of Spirit. The responsibility of the individual is to see, to realize what God is and does. Imagine a tree with strong branches and rich looking fruit. Suppose you hear the branch saying, "I can support myself; here is this beautiful fruit to satisfy my desires (looking to Egypt); I shall give up my attachment to the tree and feed upon this good fruit." See it sever its connection with the tree and begin to live upon its fruit (going down into Egypt). For a time it seems to flourish, but its doom is inevitable; before long both branch and fruit wither and die, Israel is in bondage. There is no mystery at all about the ills of life. They are the withered branch and its dying fruit. They are the result of thought claiming a life apart from Spirit.

The "prodigal" represents that condition of thought which leaves its home in Divine Consciousness, separates from its source and tries to find in the outer, which is called the "far country." its strength and substance. We know how at last, starving, it returns to its home.

Material sense, which is ignorance of Divine Law, claims that the visible or material is good to make one wise, to make one strong, to make one happy, to make one well. But, the same sense declares that the material also can make one weak, unhappy, and make one sick! Such belief, if accepted by our thought. makes the external a
