is as yet ignorant of cause and effect. He seeks satisfaction in things without, and considers them as the source of all good. His consciousness is centered in the body, the earth from which he believes his possibilities spring.

The "mist" well represents what can be received from this stage of consciousness. But the rising of the "mist" may typify man's aspiration after the higher, the prayers that have "gone up" from the place of undeveloped understanding.

The Garden of Eden represents the finished body.

Now, man's work must be of a higher nature; a complete change takes place. It comes about through fuller illumination, in which light the importance of the soul begins to be seen and for the time the body is humiliated.

This enlarged consciousness is indicated by the parting of the "river" in Eden into "four heads." The name of the first, Pison means "changed"; the second, Gihon means "Valley of grace" or illumination through inward light; the third "head," Hiddekel represents "Voice or sound," which means expression 'the step that must follow more light; and the fourth, Euphrates means "making fruitful." These well represent the result in manifestation that comes with expression.
