1 and 2 Corinthians - p. 372

Letters addressed to the church at Corinth, which included those who lived in the adjacent towns of Achaia. Paul was eighteen months at Corinth during his second missionary tour, visiting neighboring cities and establishing centers of work in them. Corinth was the great center of commercial traffic on the overland route from Rome to the east, and also between Upper and Lower Greece. All trade of the Mediterranean flowed through it so that a perpetual fair was held there, to which was added the great annual gatherings of Greeks at the "Isthmian Games," I Cor. 9:24-27. Corinth was proverbial for wealth, luxury and profligacy; population mainly foreign, formed of colonists from Caesar's army and of manumitted slaves, settlers from Asia Minor, returned exiles from the islands, and at this time a large influx of Jews lately expelled from Rome. Acts 18:2.
