Here was a man. A simple, humble and virtuous citizen of Concord. He had no panacea for society. He never attempted to fix Truth. He wanted to bring men not to me, but to themselves." He urged men to "be real and admirable, not as we know, but as you know." He simply reported "what hints I have collected of the transcendent simplicity and energy of the Highest Law." He powdered the attributes of God and found them all good. His affections and intellect were equally developed, as Thoreau noted.
