Evolution of Psychic Healing

by Harmon McQuilkin

"Evolution is better than Revolution. New Thought Library's New Thought Archives encompass a full range of New Thought from Abrahamic to Vedic. New Thought literature reflects the ongoing evolution of human thought. New Thought's unique inclusion of science, art and philosophy presents a dramatic contrast with the magical thinking of decadent religions that promulgate supersticions standing in the way of progress to shared peace and prosperity." ~ Avalon de Rossett

higher thinking means enlightened action.

It is the very same blade that has done the cutting in all ages through these variations on today's psychotherapy, often with the seasoning of some religious justification or other.

In Conclusion

IN concluding, let me add a few skeleton remarks. . First, psychic healing is here to stay. There are multiple methods relying on various means. It is a legitimate method, if legitimately used. But its legitimate use may not be so wide as many are claiming.

Every day the daily papers reveal new surgical successes.

The past century gave us the breakthroughs of John Snow, Joseph Lister and recently the remarkable work of Wilhelm Roentgen. It seems one cannot pick up a paper without reading about a new breakthrough by the imminent Dr. Halsted. He has moved surgery in the United States forward enormously. The advance of medicine is astounding.

While our grand parents were doomed to die from cholera, or rabies today we have vaccines for these once deadly infections. Within the last ten years, vaccines have been produced for tetanus, typhoid fever, and even that scourge of civilization, bubonic plague.

While process of inoculation was used by Chinese physicians in the 10th century. This ancient practice is only now becoming widely used in the West.

Ole Lund comments:

""The earliest documented examples of vaccination are from India and China in the 17th century, where vaccination with powdered scabs from people infected with smallpox was used to protect against the disease. Smallpox used to be a common disease throughout the world and 20 to 30% of infected persons died from the disease. Smallpox was responsible for 8 to 20% of all deaths in several European countries in the 18th century. The tradition of vaccination may have originated in India in AD 1000."

Thus mental healing has its place and there is no doubt it will grow in use to the extent that we attain a better understanding of the principles, yet we must never forego the sure and sound practice of vaccination, or when necessary to avail ourselves of surgery.

When we see the miracle of Aspirin, and join it with that of Quinine, how long will it be until there are numerous extacts to heal diseases that have known no cure. The barks of trees held these cures, the petals of a flower may hold another; even the mushroom may one day offer a vehicle for healing.

Suggestion is doubtless beneficial as long as it does not produce a cauterization of the appreciative and sympathetic faculties of the mind, or of simply good old fashioned reason, but experience would seem to point to such a cauterizing of the common mind and consequently the fading away of the quality of ethics and decency. At times these are replaced with outward social forms, polite words, perhaps an opened door or tucked in chair masking a lack of any real care or concern for anything but appearance.

Hypnosis, as an ally in the use of the suggestive principle, is itself open to the suspicion of undermining the initiative and self-control of the individual who yields himself to it, and may induce a form of slavery to the will of others for which no physical benefit could be an equivalent.

Realizing this danger, the leaders of the Emmanuel Movement use hypnotism as a last resort. These and kindred perils which gather themselves about the practice of psychotherapy advise great caution in its exercise.

Second, there is no necessary connection between any one of these six modern methods of mental healing, and any particular religion.

The Faith Curists, Christian Scientists and Emmanuel Movement leaders may claim a particular religious philosophy is the foundation of their success, but it does not naturally or necessarily belong there, as has, I think, been shown in the progress of this essay.

Atheists and Pentecostal Missioners alike heal the same diseases.

When errors are found in New Thought, then it evolves and that old New Thought is replaced with New Thought.
In the late 20th Century, New Thought became riddled with false prosperity doctrines and a lack of compassion.
The New Thought of the New Millennium leaves such delusions behind embracing a new paradigm

New Thought Day was declared by James Edgerton on August 23rd, 1915
During research while expanding the free New Thought Library, one of the ministers came across an interesting quote from early New Thought Alliance President James A. Edgerton: "'The truth, once announced, has the power not only to renew but to extend itself. New Thought is universal in its ideals and therefore should be universal in its appeal. Under the guidance of the spirit, it should grow in good works until it embraces many lands and eventually the whole world.' ~ New Thought Day, August 23rd , 1915."
