We dedicate this new edition to those folks who share with us a love of New Thought delighting in its progressive evolving nature and variety of forms both old New Thought forms such as Unity and Religious Science as well as novel forms of New Thought such as UFBL and DivineUnity. Those who pursue deeper studies in any form of New Thought soon awaken to the contrasts between those who wish New Thought to be fixed and finished like an old black and white photo graph, versus the people who recognize the timeless truth that New Thought is a progressively evolving tapestry woven from threads of many cultures. Perhaps the warp of this great tapestry are the universal laws that undergird the time-space continuum expressed within the Ancient Wisdom from many civilizations. This would mean the weft added to the warp is comprised of the ideas furnished by evolving consciousness. The Tapestry of New Thought will never end as long as their are living thinking human beings.

Over 100 years ago, in 1914, Abel Allen published the Message of New Thought. Allen clarified one of the deeper principles of New Thought which is that it is progressive and always evolving. All adherents to this metaphysical path are called upon to think outside of the box; not simply to regurgitate old New Thought ideas, but to reach within themselves while being conscious of the latest science and aware of the most recent philosophical breakthroughs; expressing novel insights that better encompass timeless truth awakened within. New Thought is bigger than any individual conception because each person is generating his or her New Thought. This means that although you can cling to institutions to provide some guidance within the process of composing your personal Matrix of Understanding, such institutions cannot be depended upon to do the work for us.

The primary work of the New Thought seeker is to compose a spiritual practice, then use it while releasing past patterns of belief in order to take up new more productive thought patterns. As you work upon your personal New Thought path, observe how others have synthesized, then modified their New Thought paths before you. Holmes is described as one of the greatest synthesizers within the New Thought Movement. Holmes not only read a wide range of literature, he was able to discern between the scientific ideas versus the nonsense that perennially crops up. While it is a mistake to lionize Holmes to the point of creating a Cult of Personality, we should read Holmes works with delight because of his wonderful way of weaving together the ideas of his time.

Readers will notice a tendency of both Holmes' brothers to conflate the various forms of New Thought. Thus they will mention Mental Science, then Science of Mind, then Divine Science almost interchangeably. It is obvious that if there were no differences between these New Thought forms, they would not have different names. Readers can look to Elizabeth Towne and other writers for clarity about the differences between the forms of New Thought. These differences are sometimes found within approach, at other times are found within philosophy, purpose or intent. Some say the difference between old New Thought and New Millennial New Thought, is that New Thought 3.0 recognizes the importance of Human Rights and compassionate action. New Thought 3.0 teaches that we begin with personal responsibility and development, then spiritual evolution calls upon us to actively work together to create shared peace and prosperity.

Keep in mind that all paths within New Thought lead to the same place which is the understanding of our oneness with God. Thus whatever New Thought branch you choose, even if you eschew old New Thought organizations, the process remains the same. Adherents develop and live a Spiritual Practice while releasing past patterns, eventually arriving at the understanding of our At-One-Ment with the Divine. We realize that we are always unified with the one energy that is called by many names and conceptualized in as many notions. We call no person "master" because we know that the ultimate arbiter of reality is each of us individually for ourselves.
