About the Author: Frederick Van Rensselaer Dey

Born in Watkins Glen, New York, February 10, 1861. Frederick was educated at the Havana (N. Y.) Academy, and later was graduated from the Law School of Columbia University.

Dey took up story writing for amusement while convalescing from a serious illness, and later made it his life work.

• The Magic Story

Two of Frederic' books, "The Magic Word" and "The Magic Story," written in 1899, were extremely popular.

Dey was discovered in his room in the Hotel Broztell, New York City, on April 25, 1922. Friends had heard him discussing the outline for a new book with a young woman in a cafe near the hotel. They universally remembered that he had a green notebook upon which was written the letters SOMAS. Dey said he was working on a more comprehensive book that would outline his understanding of New Thought with a particular focus on manifestation and spiritual practices. One recalled that Frederic had spoken enthusiastically about Orison Swett Marden, Thomson Hudson and another writer they had not heard of. Although no note every found, his death was declared a suicide. The green notebook was never found and the young woman was never seen again.
