"Walt Whitman, an American, one of the roughs, a kosmos, disorderly, fleshly, and sensual, no sentimentalist, no stander above men or women or apart from them, no more modest than immodest". Walt Whitman is considered one of America's greatest writers. Most likely he was a "trisexual" which means he would try anything sexual, but his attractions were always detailed in his writings and vested with great passion. This shows a sincere committment to his passions and demonstrates a great love of life. His poetry is often analyzed, cited, and exploited in other's writings.

Despite his great genious, Whitman had a typical American weltaunschaung characterized by contradictory views which shifted depending on his momentary perspective. He supported the abolishment of slavery, yet felt that the groups promoting abolition were filled with "eye-popping idiots who were more likely to foment violence" than promote a logical and smooth transition. This is one the great challenges for the thoughtful soul. Those who are thoughtful are likely to hold more complex views than those who are thoughtless.
The great spiritual teachers admonish us to judge by works. If this should be the measure employed then Whitman's works are firmly egalitarian with a strong humanist perspective.reflecting the view that God is both immanent and transcendent while the human soul is immortal and in a state of progressive development..
Whitman's balanced and judicious perspective prompted leading extremists to condemn his methods, branding them madness. Whitman worked as a journalist, teacher, government clerk, and medic, but is internationally known for his poetry. Scholars looking to spice up their papers, and writers seeking more lucrative topics, make much of Whitman's sexuality. The politically correct like to draw attention to his stereotypical 19th Century views on race. Most certainly his views were not those of an enlightened New Millennial incarnate. Whitman's works have impacted folks around the globe. Perhaps the only way to understand why is to read them.
