Most likely he was a "trisexual" which means he would try anything sexual, but his attractions were always detailed in his writings and vested with great passion. This shows a sincere committment to his passions and demonstrates a great love of life. His poetry is often analyzed, cited, and exploited in other's writings.

Despite his great genious, Whitman had a typical American weltaunschaung characterized by contradictory views which shifted depending on his momentary perspective. He supported the abolishment of slavery, yet felt that the groups promoting abolition were filled with "eye-popping idiots who were more likely to foment violence" than promote a logical and smooth transition.
