Thought enables us to analyse, to adapt our conduct to the presentations of experience. It is not at first an initiating or originating power. Even when it later arrives at new conclusions, this arrival is due to the contributions of experience at the beginning and all along the way. To become aware of hunger is one fact, to reflect upon it is another; for one might become quiet enough to inhibit a rising tide of impatience, one might become so absorbed in conversation with a friend as to forget to eat, and so on. You can think of a thousand alternatives in contrast with the one which you proceed to act upon. Thought is infinitely rich. This is at once our joy and our sorrow, for while it supplies endless channels of interest to keep us from ennui it also reveals so many side-issues of theory that we become creatures of dogma, creed, and doctrinal disputation.
