The New Thought movement is rooted within the timeless tradition of people asserting their right to Freedom of Thought.
The NewThought.net/work Serving New Thought is a non-profit spiritual ministry supporting
New Thought Seekers and sharers to find the way through apparent chaos
to the deeper truth of inner peace and shared prosperity.
"Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance."
~ Article 18, Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)
It's highest manifestation is found within the most simple and elegant understanding that "as we change our thinking, we change our lives."
Unlike those religions which can be seen to be frozen in time such that they fight both science and good sense while opposing Human Rights and Reason,
New Thought is a
"clarion call to consciousness,
embracing mindfulness,
knowing that thoughtfulness
and compassionate action manifest a world of mutual respect,
shared peace and prosperity."
At times, regular folk find themselves feeling confused and worried. Global Climate Chaos demonstrates itself with storms of greater ferocity than ever before. Floods imperil the people of the mountains, storms endanger those upon the coasts, while ever increasing numbers of tornadoes reek havoc upon the plains.
Civil Society appears to be threatened by corruption as we witness the rise of rogues who offer easy solutions yet fail to deliver on their promises of improved infrastructure, free public education to the highest level, universal health care which is recognized as a human right in the free world.
Instead of delivering national prosperity, such leaders deliver their nations' treasury to those who are so obscenely wealthy that such money is not only uneeded, it is unused. Corrupt officials demonstrate a lack of patriotism through violating precedent to push spurious privilege in order to enrich family and friends through calculated nepotism. They generally begin by avoiding and evading taxation by creating complex systems which necessitate tax professionals to navigate.
While average Joe and normal Jane struggle to pay, plutocrats corrupt officials both elected and appointed in order to enrich their friends and avoid responsibility.
Often voicing alliance with religious groups, they forget the clear admonishment of Jesus:
"Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s."
While regular folk work all week long just to make ends meet, the engineers of corruption avoid and evade giving back to the societies which gave them the opportunity and means to create their fortunes. They hoard ill-gotten gains into hidden bank accounts in the same manner as those mythical dragons across the vast spectrum of human mythology would devastate populations, carry away their wealth and livelihood, store it in a cave, out of circulation. Such corruption is the type of destruction that leads to stagnation and eventual decline of the common good which is a right of all people in all nations.
New Thought teaches that good leaders demonstrate wisdom (wisdom = knowledge + compassion), and leadership which manifests the highest good for those they lead. In the case of public official, we expect them to act in the interest of the people. In the case of spiritual leaders we expect them to act in the interest of the membership teaching spiritual principles which support personal evolution and the good of the community.
When we see corrupt organizations violating the sacred principles of civil society, or corrupt individuals violating human rights, dictating according to unprincipled tenets of corruption in order to benefit themselves and their circles of troll-like friends. When we see groups legislating against the public good, they are following old thoughts and past patterns of those twins that walk hand in hand: Domination and Corruption.
New Thought teaches integrity, responsibility and accountability. New Thought teaches that we must take action. Just like emergency room doctors, spiritual folk follow the adage: "Treat and move your hands and feet." New Thought is a path of action. While new age gurus and purveyors of odd Prosperity Gospels might push passive concepts such as "give me your money, then God will make you rich" or simply think about what you want long enough and hard enough and it will manifest. Traditional New Thought teaches us that "as we change our thinking, we change our lives" and "Treat and move your hands and feet."
Spiritual people know they deserve better and are willing to take action to manifest change.
The ancient stories about trolls hiding under bridges are stories about the corrupters of Civil Society who horde their ill gotten gains and hide from the sunlight. Not content with profits earned through legitimate means, these trolls lurk beneath society's bridges to prosperity with schemes aimed at robbing the elderly of peace in their twilight years, while stealing the education from our children in order to enslave the future generations to Mammon (the demon who teaches followers to place profit above peace).
It is right and proper to demand the same from those who wish to lead.
This deep principle of New Thought was summed up in 1914 by Abel Allen
NEW THOUGHT is not, as many believe, a name or expression employed to define any fixed system of thought, philosophy, or religion, but is a term used to convey the idea of growing or developing thought. In considering this subject, the word "New" should be duly and freely emphasized, because the expression "New Thought" relates only to what is new and progressive.

19th Century Abrahamics of all stripes: Jews, Christians, Islamics, and Mormons found inspiration in the teaching:
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is right and good..." ~ Romans 12:2
When sharing with seekers, early New Thought teachers sometimes pointed to this biblical passage as a source of the term 'New Thought':
"Be transformed by the renewing of your mind" is one of many expressions in humanities' vast heritage of spiritual wisdom which teaches this New Thought principle.

The United States embarked upon the 19th Century tainted by the institution of slavery, but the principles inscribed within its Constitution inspired a growing Abolitionist movement which eventually led to Civil War resulting in the abolition of slavery as an institution.
While the legacy of slavery continued to cast a shadow, the spark of truth that there is only one human race would continue to light the fires of freedom across the nation and the world. One of these fires was the desire to see the truth of gender equality. While America struggled with the challenge of accepting the truth of the equality of people regardless of appearance, it was still hobbled by the bondage of gender inequality. Throughout the world, all the way through the 19th Century half the population was prevented from contributing to the productivity and prosperity of the nation.
Eminent American philosophers such as John Bascom propounded the principles of New Thought while Helen Van-Anderson championed New Thought through forming the first New Thought society / organization.
Although the understanding that germs are the primary cause of disease had been first proposed in 1546 and despite the use of vaccination against smallpox begun in the early 19th Century, the old superstitious thinking that disease was a result of bad air held most doctors in a vise like grip. Surgeons scorned the new thought that they should wash their hands before surgery, and doctors might start the day dealing with diarrhea, then examine multiple patients without ever washing. The closest thing to contemporary medicine was herbalism. It was often more dangerous to see a doctor than to avoid them altogether.
New Thought promoted the view that healing could be attained through the Mind-Body Connection, then maintained through careful conscious living including reprogamming the mind with meditation, affirmations, and prayer.
At the same time, New Thought Sharers advocated health principles which included fresh air, exercise, hygiene and a healthy diet which was primarily comprised of vegetables. In an age without antibiotics these principles combined with positive thought proved more successful than the patent medicines which were so popular and the deadly unwashed surgeons of the day.
19th Century New Thought Sharers distinguished themselves from Christian Scientists and "faith healers" by embracing the emerging Science of Medicine. New Thought literature from the late 19th Century and early 20th Century often refers to Christian Scientists as "Eddyists" because of their slavish devotion to their leader Mary Baker Eddy. Eddy promoted her beliefs in her 1875 book Science and Health that reality is purely "spiritual" and the material world an illusion. New Thought writers often lampooned Eddyists for their belief that sickness was an illusion to be corrected by prayer alone.
In contrast to the Eddyists, New Thought believers promoted the understanding that the Divine Life is manifested through action rooted in right thought. This is called "Co-Creation." They also taught that healing is manifested throught action including medical science.
God's will is a form of Determism. But what is Determinism?
Religious Determinism or "God's Will," is used more often than anything else to justify brutality, insanity, abuse and stupidity. It is quite common for terrorists with religious motivations to invoke "God's Will" as a justification for their destructive acts. Such people will often say "God willing" before they set out to do something.
Co-Creation is the teaching that we are in Divine Partnership. While most people live in a state of "reactive consciousness," meaning they are in a process of unconsciousns co-creation which produces destructive results, New Thought teaches us that through practices such as meditation, conscious communication (including affirmations), Contemplation, and Affirmative Prayer (also called Spiritual Mind Treatment), we can transform our lives through cultivating a "proactive consciousness." Through taking actions, planting seeds through compassionate action, we will produce desired effects which are positive.
The Divine (God, Goddess, Spirit) flows through all things, all people, at all times.
Through cooperation and compassionate action guided by the principle of highest good, we co-create with the Divine through cooperating with each other. One way to look at this is that we are all nodes upon the Divine Network and the more we serve the highest good of the network the better things work. Thus by serving highest good, we are helping all beings including ourselves.
Early New Thought teachers used a wide variety of source material from the classics and early translations of the Bhagavad Gita, the Tao, and numerous Buddhist texts. Seekers learned "If you feel that New Thought is the best spiritual path, demonstrate your belief through the power of intelligent argument and reason, not through anger." Students were encouraged to read a wide variety of both scientific and religious texts. Some New Thought Sharers pointed to the Abrahamic teaching: "Love God with all your heart and soul" as the basis for learning the principles and practices of all the world's religions and spiritual paths.
Living by and sharing Universal Spiritual Principles demands that a person transcends the limitations which commonly confine the average soul. The Spiritual Seeker desiring Illuminaton and Awakening does not wear a blindfold or blinkers nor is confined to a single source. Those who begin the path as Buddhists benefit from a study of the texts from the four schools of the Abrahamics. Likewise those coming from one of the fours schools of Abrahamism: Judaism, Christianism, Islamism or Mormonism, benefit from studying Buddhist texts such as the Dhammapada and the Lotus Sutra. Some of the greatest New Thought teachers such as Yogananda began their journey through Vedic Teachings, then studied both Abrahamic and Buddhist texts. The living and sharing of Universal Spiritual Principles is a life long process.
All knowledge comes through human beings. Whether one ascribes such knowledge to higher thought or divine revelation, a person had to speak it, or write it.
Does the path teach the truth of equality?
~ If a path teaches sexism saying that either men or women are superior or inferior then this is a sign that the path is a negative path.
~ If a path teaches racism saying that people of a certain appearance are better or worse than another, this is a sign that it is destructive path.
Does the path teach its followers to make war on people who are not on that path or hold different beliefs from themselves?
~ If a path teaches making war on people who do not believe as they do, this is a definite sign that it is not a good path.
Does the path teach the abuse of children or women?
~ If a path teaches abuse of children or women, then this is an obvious sign that it is not a good path
"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
Do not believe in anything because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason,
and is conducive to the good and benefit of all, then accept it and live up to it."
~ Shakyamuni Buddha .
Equipped with better communication technology, photography, film and other means of documentation, during World War 2, humanity collectively witnessed the abuses and destruction perpetrated with the goal of domination in the interests of extreme right wing ideologies. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was the gift of Eleanor Roosevelt and other great leaders to the peoples of the world. They established a firm foundation by recognizing that all human beings are endowed with these Human Rights, including Freedom of Thought. They did this for the highest good of all humanity, with the goal of ending such abuses for all time by establishing a Fair World For All.
New Thought Today recognizes that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is the highest spiritual teaching thus far and that any teaching which contravenes or violates this sacred covenant is no longer valid. The emergence of the UDHR was prophesized by many throughout time across our planet. It was also prophesized that the emergence of this truth would prompt some to fight it in order to continue their quest for domination without regard to the destruction of all life on our planet.
The answers to these questions will tell you a great deal about this center and its leadership. In New Thought we expect leaders to be aware and conscious. When we visit a person in a coma, it is not surprising that they are unaware of their surroundings or what is happening in the world. When we visit with our leaders, including Spiritual Leader's we expect them to be aware. We hope they are more aware than others including ourselves, because awareness is the first step to consciousness. Human Rights are a key aspect of New Thought Today. It is important that both our leaders and ourselves are aware of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The recognition of Human Rights begin in one's home. Respect for all members of a household regardless of age, gender or means. Respect is demonstrated through communication, both the manner and means. Respect is demonstrated through action. A home which is filled with abuse, whether emotional, psychological or physical is a home in need of love and New Thought.
When seeking New Thought Fellowship, you can find wonderful folks who are loving and supportive, yet it is up to you to discern if the leadership and its teachings align with highest good which includes your own.
All spiritual communities are comprised of people. Those spiritual leaders who are in service to their communities sharing inspiration and taking compassonate action, understand the root teachings of compassion and cocreation. Be aware that there are also leaders who have acquired credentials with the goal of self promotion. There are also leaders whose primary goal is personal profit and the power that comes with leading a spiritual community.
Every spiritual path has true spiritual leaders, as well as leaders who are in it for themselves. It is up to you to ask questions and to look deeper. The existence of the UDHR is one way to know if the leadership of a New Thought Community is aware and conscious.
Ask questions, here are a few:
New Thought teaches "as we change our thinking, we change our lives," and "change ourselves and the whole world changes with us" as well as "take compassionate action in alignment with highest good" for the benefit of our fellow beings.
When visiting a New Thought Community be aware, look around, and observe.
While such communities might tote membership in various New Thought organizations, keep in mind that membership is generally acquired through financial contributions to the "Parent Organization."
There are a number of popular new "gimmicks" which reveal that a New Thought Center might be less New Thought and more "new age."
Here is a list of some of those gimmicks:
We are each responsible to do our part, to be life-long learners, to strive to awaken to the Divine and to be the Divine Presence through being a compassionate presense, to be the Divine Voice through sharing wisdom. (Wisdom is the combination of knowledge with compassion.)
"Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection."
~ Article 25, UDHR
New Thought Today teaches that it is the responsibility of all adults
Caring adults do not blame children for being hungry, we feed them. Spiritual beings do not look for the Divine, (God or Goddess) outside of themselves; knowing that the Divine is within us, we demonstrate Divine Action, God's Love, Goddess' kindness through compassionate deeds informed with wisdom and care.
Genuine New Thought teaches that love and compassion is the basis for good living. In the late 20th Century, an odd phenomena could be observed via television. Minister teaching that if viewers give them money, they would "tap into" the "power of prosperity." Thus the money the viewers gave would "return to them through the universe in various ways." These teachings are known as the "Prosperity Gospels". They focus upon certain bibilical passages while ignoring core Abrahamic principles.
In the same manner, some people began teaching what might be termed "inhumane principles." They would point to people who were poor and without knowing these people, judge them to be victims of "poverty consciousness" or "bad thinking." While it is certainly important to change the way we think in order to effect change in our lives, we must always be aware that we are in this life together. If a person is murdered, or dragged behind a pick up truck by a chain, it is not appropriate to blame that person for what the perpetrator did. Yet toward the end of the 20th Century, some people claiming to teach New Thought were doing exactly that. They were blaming the victims of crimes for what the perpetrator did.
It is important when seeking a New Thought community to be alert to this type of "spiritual malpractice", or other forms of BS.
Here are some more questions to ask yourself.
New Thought does not teach shame and blame. If you hear someone promoting shame and blame through blaming underprivileged children for their lack of financial security on "poverty consciousness," you may have stumbled into a New Thought Center whose leaders are ensconced in what is sometimes called "Late New Thought." This is an aberration and not traditional New Thought. You should consider continuing your search.
Some people like to point to certain religious groups and say: "They are evil." Often this is done without any understanding or learning about the groups they are demonizing. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) states:
"Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance."
While some folk might feel that their particular perspective / religion is "the correct one" and they might point to the books and teachings of their particular religions as justifying their points of view, We must always remember that the highest spiritual teaching imparted to humanity thus far is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) Anything which disagrees with the (UDHR) is invalid and not in accordance with this Divine Understanding imparted to humanity through humanity in 1948.
Obviously some people would like to forget the UDHR and others are unaware of its existence. Those who are aware of the UDHR but would like to forget it, do so in order to limit human rights on the basis of gender, appearance or beliefs. History is replete with examples of people seeking and at times succeeding in victimizing people who believe differently than they do.
The Middle East is filled with the burnt shells of temples and churches burnt by people who were intolerant. The perpetrators of these crimes generally justify their intolerance through interpretations of religious texts. Murder, rape, torture and other crimes against humanity continue in parts of the planet which lack recognition of the UDHR. while raping and killing people, including children. The victimization of the Yazidis is only one of the more recent examples of this. 100 years ago, in 1917 millions of people, including Yazidis, Druze, Alawites, Jews, Kurds and Christians of all kinds were being murdered by the Ottoman Turks. The Turks justified those murders by saying that those people were not really good citizens and might support their enemies.
The Ottoman Turks dehumanized Christians and others, murdering them in ways that makes the Nazi Holocaust pale in comparison. Murder, genocide, mass rape of women, men and children still goes on around the world today. It is done through dehumanization. Angry people like the Ottoman Turks, seek to dehumanize other people for other reasons.
What makes Canada, Europe (including Russia), South Africa, Brazil and other nations different from
Turkey, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Phillipines and a host of other nations?
Canada, and other advanced nations are able and willing to admit the problems of the past
and thereby to build in the present the infrastructure which provides for Universal Rights and shared respect now and the future.
The US has made great strides forward through recognizing the problems of the past.
The US and Canada are still dealing with the genocide of 98% of the original inhabitants, yet they are dealing with the issue.
Nations such as Turkey cannot even admit the problems which occured over 100 years ago under a different political system!
While Canada, Brazil and South Africa share the truth of Freedom of Thought, Turkey, Arabia etc... lie about the past and do not respect Freedom of Thought.
Some people hold the odd belief that politics can be divorced from spirituality. This not the dominant belief around the globe. In most of the world people strive to embody their spirituality in all aspects of their lives. In some nations people are motivated in extreme ways by their beliefs. Historically there have been countless lunatics who have used religious justification for their destructive actions.
Spirituality is meant to be lived fully as a personal pursuit at times in fellowship. When spirituality becomes a group pursuit it often becomes tainted with politics. This does not mean that fellowship is bad; it simply means that we must be aware of the challenges presented by fellowship which can interfere with the process of enlightenment. At the same time, individuals need fellowship in order to fully actualize. This is one of the reason that religion and governance must remain separate in order to maintain Freedom of Thought.
They know that your actions are rooted in your thoughts, which are founded within your beliefs.
Your failure to act, or motivation to act flows from your beliefs.
For people to live in peace, Freedom of Thought and respect for Freedom of Expression is essential.
Those people that fail to recognize the truth that the majority of the world lives in states of deprivation
have chosen to blind themselves to the same extent as a person who does not stand up against a lynching
is complicit because of a failure to say "no" to the actions of injustice being perpetuated by fellow human beings.
It is recognized that while we can train the mind, we can only open the heart. Emotions follow thought. If we think about something positive, we are uplifted; if we think about something negative, we can become depressed. As we pursue the path and train the mind, we nurture our ability to respond instead of react. This is our first step to becoming proactive.
"The will come a time when seeking wealth and power, some people will create 'bodies without souls,' in the beginning they will live, then die. But after centuries go by, some will grant them rights. At first this will seem benign but then they will seek equal footing with humanity and then the people will be brought to the brink of annihilation and must decide if they wish to keep their Human Rights or go over the edge never to return."
One of the most important prophecies is the prediction of the rise of "Bodies without Souls." Moves will be made either to constrain the UDHR in order to limit people from access to justice, or a small group of people will seek to designate Bodies without Souls as humans.
What are Bodies without Souls?
Corporations. This is revealed when the word corporation is broken down to its roots.
"Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?"
"The average person does not accept Divine things, deeming them to be foolish, he is unable to fathom with reason because he lacks spiritual discernment."
Do not be surprised when some people deny climate science, or corruption among the rich and powerful. Average people do not desire to learn finding it tedious and difficult. This is why so few people feel they can be successful. Success demands learning and imagination. Most people find it easier to "toe the line" and "follow the crowd."
Look around and see!
Some people are deprived of clean water. We see this around the world, not only in Africa and South America, but also in the United States. In contrast to the progress made in the 20th Century, today US citizens are routinely been deprived of safe clean water.
People around the globe witness events in Flint, Michigan and Puerto Rico. Nations observe. Populations witness. Unscrupulous individuals see such deeds as examples in how to enrich themselves. When the leaders of the United States (US) allow its citizens to be sickened by something as simple as clean water, people everywhere are disheartened by this blatant corruption.
"Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control."
~ Article 25, UDHR
Advanced nations of the world recognize that to maintain robust economies society must provide universal health care and paid sick leave. This is the spiritual way. The Divine Life is manifested through insuring through shared peace and prosperity.
When a nation elects idiots, the world does not wonder "why does this nation elect idiots?" The world collectively thinks: "there was time when that was sensible because its people believed in Human Rights, but now they have lost their way. Perhaps soon they will be like the lost nations and believe that 'might makes right' and that 'a lie said enough times becomes true.'"
While there are some who wish to define the Divine, major religions share the principle that this is not possible. "Who can discern the mind of God?"
Divine Mind flows through all, at all times. We align with Divine Mind through spiritual practices such as prayer and meditation. When a person gives a name to the Divine, one is simply defining a concept about the Divine and oneself.
Some would like to say that action is separate from spirituality, but there is nothing so personal, or unspiritual as being killed because you believe a certain way. Some folks like to think of the Divine as feminine, others like to think of the Divine as masculine. New Thought teaches that the Divine / God / Goddess is both and neither. We feel people may call the Divine: God or Goddess, or That That Is, or any number of other names both traditional and novel.
What you call the Divine and what you choose to believe is protected by the UDHR.
This was not always the case and is still not the case in most of the world. There are more nations that restrict people's right to be free from religion or to choose a belief system different from the majority of people, than nations which uphold Freedom of Thought.
"Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution. Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses. The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State."
~ Article 16, UDHR
In the free nations, people can marry who they wish. In those nations under the yolk of religious tyranny, you must belong to that particular religion which is recognized by the state in order to marry.
In some nations, including the United States, child marriage occurs. In other nations divorce is not allowed, or only allowed if instigated by males.
"Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit. Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations..."
~ Article 26, UDHR
Nations that insure their populations are well educated insure their prosperity and the prosperity of their coming generations. Education is an essential part of building then maintaining a strong economy.
The Rennaissance is a good example of what happens when people are freed from the constraints and restrictions imposed upon them through superstitions wrapped in the cloak of religion. History reveals that Europe's great reflowering of knowledge happened despite the middle eastern Abrahamic beliefs which had colonized them.
For 1000 years, during what are called the Dark Ages, Europe dwelled in the doldrums of superstition due to the grip of Abrahamic Religion.
While China was undergoing a "Golden Age" and introducing paper money, tea drinking, and inventing the compass, printing and chemical breakthroughs such as gunpowder. Europe languished. China broke ground in economics, navigation, education, mining, science and warfare. Economics were made simpler and easier through paper money, people were able to work longer and more efficiently with tea, navigation was enhanced via the compass, the sharing of knowledge, history and education was made more efficient via the printing press. Mining was made easier with gunpowder.
While European "priests" were hanging female herbalists calling them "witches" when they healed their fellow citizens. China was exploring the science of herbalism and producing cures for numerous health challenges.
While you might believe that the US was created by a group of Abrahamics with copies of the King's James Bible, history reveals that the US was formed by Free Masons. Facts are not subject to whim. Your rights will belong to you as long as you exercise them. Just as your body and mind will continue to work as long as you exercise them. Know your rights. Read them, share them, protect them, exercise them: Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). While it is a fact that the highest wisdom given to humanity is the Universl Declaration of Human Rights and these rights were recognized in 1948, this does not mean that you will still have these rights in the future unless you ensure that you protect them for you and for all others.
For any person or group of people to have rights, they must first recognize them. Recognition is also the first step in what New Thought folk call Spiritual Mind Treatment. After we recognize our Universal Rights, then we must declare our Unity with those rights which means these rights are for all peoople. After knowing the truth of our Unity with these Universal Human Rights, we realize that for rights to have value, they must be realized for all people. Each and every day, we give thanks for the truth. We share this truth, releasing it in press releases, releasing it upon the internet through websites and messages knowing it is so and so it is.
NewThoughtLibrary.com, FindACenter.com and other open source resources expand and gain increased accuracy through the participation of interested parties. While the founders felt that New Thought Leadership would have a special interest and motivation to participate, today's volunteers have recognized that participants come from everywhere and could be anyone who feels a special connection to a particular organization.
Volunteers are motivated to work on the New Thought Library, thus FindACenter.com work is jobbed out to contractors. Even contractors have noted that third party sponsors don't seem to care about updating the info, or to insure that listings they are sponsoring show all the info possible. They just want to redirect button links. Some become sponsors simply to upgrade the listing to show the Prosperity designator but never take the time to manifest an update of information.
Years have come and gone. Decades have gone by since Dr. Spottiswoode, Dr. Avalon, Dr. Sells and the other founders started this work in support of New Thought.
Whether you are looking for a New Thought Community, or reading a text in www.NewThoughtLibrary.com, all that work was done by volunteers. The founders were the chief volunteers.
For years generations of volunteers were still using the phone. We changed that.
Sometimes people want to speak to one of the founders.
Dr. Spottiswoode died so he is not available.
(Although there are some New Thought practitioners who claim they can speak with the dead, we do not share this belief).
We pass on messages to the those ministers who are living. They are not Millennials so they don't necessarily check email regularly. The only type of email accepted by those founders who use email is email with PGP encryption. Other than diplomats and journalists, most people don't know how to use PGP.
If you wish to speak with Dr. A or Dr. Sells, simply put in a request. Don't expect a quick answer, but one will eventually come. Be sure and include a phone number, skype ID (Although due to security concerns Skype is the same as using a phone), Signal ID, Telegram ID, etc.... You will need to load Signal or another secure communications app on your phone, but it is possible to do prayer work with Dr. A or J.C.
Your email address will be important for you when getting support through
https://NewThought.net/help
We have upgraded the support system eliminating the need for phone calls.
We will be happy to set up your FREE hosting and even provide you with great New Thought website designs, or to provide you with PHP installs such as WordPress, Joomla or Drupal. All FREE!
Although we no longer provide training,
we CAN provide contractors to give you training or to do web updates.
We recommend that you put in some effort and do your own updates.
It is not that hard.
Sponsored by caring contributors from around the world, powered by fun loving volunteers.
We listen to your feedback to present these wonderful texts in a clear and easy to use format for studying, teaching and enjoyment.
The Purpose of New Thought Library is to provide a comprehensive online library and a corresponding portable database which explores the History of Thought, evolution of thought and form, with an emphasis on those public domain texts which reveal how the spectrum of New Thought Today helps adherents enjoy the full protection of Humanity's highest collective spiritual expression: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR was manifested by humanity in 1948, after two world wars demonstrated clearly that a third world war could destroy all life on earth. All intelligent and caring souls share the understanding that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is essential to our survival and wherever these rights are not illegally contravened, there is increased peace and prosperity.
One of these essential freedoms is Article 18: Freedom of Thought. While to those living within civil societies may feel that Freedom of Thought is a natural part of living, in some cultures this is simply not the case. There are many societies in which people are not free to explore the vast beautiful heritage of human culture and are certainly not allowed to believe anything but the state sanctioned religion. One of the core concepts of New Thought is "as we change our thinking, we change our lives." If a person is not free to change his or her thinking, then how can change be effected?
One of the core concepts of New Thought is that "positive thinking brings better results than pessimism." It is hard to inspire children to be creative and feel happy about life if they are taught that they are terrible creatures. New Thought teaches us to look on the Bright Side of Life, while being careful not to be brightsided. "Brightsiding" is a term that describes people who refuse to look at problems believing that denial will somehow miraculously deliver solutions.
Another essential freedom articulated in the UDHR is Article 19: Freedom of Opinion. The freedoms defined within the UDHR are part of the foundation of Civil Society ensuring that people everywhere have the freedom to believe what they feel most inspired by, then express those beliefs solo or in communion with others. In New Thought, we teach that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are the highest collective Spiritual teaching that Humanity has thus far produced.
Although the UDHR is now recognized as International Law, some nations do not fully enfranchise their people with these rights. New Thought teaches us that we must be individually strong and work collectively and compassionately to insure that all people of the world are guaranteed these rights and that they are respected. The only way to create a better world is through love and light. This is why it is so important to embrace the original truth of New Thought. It can be challenging for some people living in (partnership) countries with higher increments of freedom and consequent prosperity to understand what it is like to live within (dominator) countries where such freedoms are not part of the social contract. It is also quite difficult for dominators to become partners.
Recent world events clearly show how the old paradigms no longer have value. Informed citizens have heard some politicians propound the belief that positive outcomes can be effected through "regime change." Yet violence in the Middle East has been exacerbated through these policies which are rooted in the dominator paradigm. Everywhere these policies have been implemented we see burgeoning chaos. While CoCreators elevate people through conscious conduct and partnership, Dominators seek to impose order. In contrast to the constitutions the allies imposed upon Germany and Japan after the second world war, allied blood and treasure expended in Afghanistan and Iraq did not translate into similar constitutions promoting progressive positive change. Instead, the liberated (conquered) nations were allowed to create constitutions which recognized a particular religion and thereby abrogated the ability of those cultures to thrive.
Experience shows clearly that secular constitutions are an essential ingredient in securing stability for nations that have experienced domination by extremists. The failure of allied political leadership within this area is glaringly obvious for most people, but this does not mean that all people are able to understand why this failure occurred. This is most likely due to a global consolidation of media into a scant six (6) megacorporations. Most citizens around the globe are unable to obtain accurate information about events: local or global. except from internet resources.
New Thought is a metaphysical movement which got its name in the 19th Century. New Thought arose within the context of an intellectual fervor (due to freedoms articulated in the U.S. Bill of Rights) within the U.S. in the mid 19th Century (1800's.) People began to debate beliefs traditional to their culture, explore beliefs from other cultures and ultimately to formulate new systems of beliefs usually in conjunction with the scientific insights available to them at that time in history. New Thought Spirituality is distinguished from Old Thought Religions through its embrace of science and the certain core concepts such as CoCreation (partnership) and evolution in thought and form (Spiritual Evolution).
CoCreation is at the heart of all true New Thought teachings. CoCreation is the teaching that we are in partnership with the Divine. It is not a new teaching. It is in fact one of the oldest teachings within humanity's collective cultural heritage. CoCreation teaches us that the secret at the heart of lasting peace, prosperity and joyful living is partnership. The values of Partnership Culture are expressed in positive terms with the best expression of these being the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Those cultures and countries which most fully embody the expression of these rights have the highest indices of health and happiness. One of the best examples of this truth is Sweden. While Sweden has some natural resources, it's greatest resource is its people. Thus Sweden has an excellent educational system which is more advanced than most of the rest of the world. From the age of six, every Swede has equal access to free education. Beginning at age seven, a minimum of nine years education is mandated for all citizens. Yet educational opportunity comes even earlier with the provision of pre-school. By the time Swedes are 16 years old, their education supercedes that of 63% of U.S. citizens and 95% of all high school graduates. 19 and 20 year old Swedes graduating from Gymnasium are more advanced than 74% of all U.S. citizens. Yet Swedes are not content to 'rest upon their laurels', today efforts are being made to improve Sweden's basic education system through studying methods in Korea, Finland and Holland.
The partnership paradigm emphasizes shared prosperity for improved performance of all participants. Economic revelations in 2014 by Thomas Picketty in his book Capital in the 21st Century have clearly demonstrated that shared peace and prosperity are predicated on ensuring Universal Free Education for all Citizens. Often the challenge to implementation of such programmes is rooted within decadent dominator patterns. Sometimes Dominators reject universal free education because it will empower groups of people they wish to suppress such as females. At other times Dominators reject universal free education because of 'hazing psychology' in which individuals who have undergone abuse feel that others must also undergo the same abuse. The former group might have religious reasons for withholding educational opportunity, while the latter group rationalizes that certain levels of abuse are helpful in the development of fear-based mentality.
Dominators have a different view of the value of human life which contrast with CoCreators. While CoCreators find inherent value within each person, Dominators devalue lives based upon subjective values. Religious Dominators promulgate fear using false teachings about others who do not share their degrading values often targeting females as being of lesser value. Economic Dominators use equally specious rationales to debase the lives of those who they deem inferior for one reason or another.
CoCreators share the partnership value of Universal Access to free medical care knowing that this is part of the equation necessary for us to potentiate our innate capacities for creativity, compassionate action and conscious living. While Dominators seek ways to exclude people from gaining access to health care, CoCreators seek ways to ensure that all people are healthy and happy. We are all familiar with Dominator values. Dominator's love hierarchy believiing that people are like lower pimates and that someone must be at the top and someone at the bottom. In contrast to Dominator values, are Partnership values which teach that through CoCreation and Coopration, all people can be happy and healthy.
Spiritual Awakening is when a person becomes aware that it is possible to live consciously. This begins with Awareness. When we become aware that while we cannot control everything in our lives, we can have healthy responses to events and situations. When a person begins to respond, instead of react, he has taken the first step in the process of awakening. The next step is to understand that every moment is an opportunity to change and that some changes can be challenges. When we realize that we are in an ongoing process of transformation and can choose to live proactively instead of reactively, then we can make self directed changes that are powerful, profound and positive.
Old Thought is often characterized by paradigms of competition while New Thought focuses on CoCreation. When we look at Old Thought religions, the challenge is interpretation. While old religions can contain much wonderful ancient wisdom, they have also been the vehicle for destructive behavior. Part of the Core Concept of Spiritual Evolution is that it is important to toss out decadent ideas that cause destructive behavior. Individuals embody this truth by replacing negative belief patterns with novel positive beliefs, dynamic cultures and civil societies find new ways to approach challenges.
Throughout the world today, there are thousands of belief systems. Most of these belief systems are potent yet passive. Some belief systems are not passive in their expression nor in their promotion. Usually the weaker a belief system, then the more likely that its adherents will use violence to promote it. We don't normally see healthy, intelligent people being abusive. This is because healthy intelligent people are usually able to learn how to communicate in better ways such that they achieve what they desire. But in contrast to such people, we often see people of lesser intellect resort to violence to achieve their ends.
Two New Thought is different from old Vedic Thought because instead of teaching a passive approach to life and spirituality as solely a process of navel gazing introspection and inward development which ignores the problems and challenges of the world, New Thought is a powerful progressive spiritual path which promotes positive change for all beings. In the words of Terry McBride, "Unlike the ancient monks, or gurus who were walling themselves off from the world, or sitting like the fool on a hill watching the world go round while teaching passive acceptance, the New Thought Master comes down from the hill cocreates with God in partnership creating a better world right now for all people, for all time."
While some maintain that New Thought originated with Phineas Quimby. It is more accurate to say that New Thought emerged from a world wide movement in which Quimby enrolled, called Mesmerism / Animal Magnetism. During this time, the late 1830's medical science had not regained the insights known in earlier times in various parts of the world. This previous knowledge had been destroyed on multiple occasions primarily due to war, but at times due to natural disasters. This is why the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is now international law and is acknowledged by the world as essential for humanity to survive and also to thrive.
It was not until August 1865, that Joseph Lister applied a piece of lint dipped in carbolic acid solution onto the wound of a seven-year-old boy at Glasgow Infirmary and discovered that he could thereby prevent infection. The following year, Lister published a series of 6 articles in the Lancet in which he instructed surgeons to wear clean gloves, wash their hands and medical instruments before and after operations with 5% carbolic acid solution. While germ theory had been proposed by Girolamo Fracastoro in 1546, it took over 300 years for medical science to "change its thinking and thereby change life." Lister's work prompted a transition that was brought to full recognition by Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch. As their work demonstrated the truth of germ theory, the field of bacteriology blossomed leading to identification of the actual organisms that cause many diseases. Viruses were discovered in the 1890s. For a period of time, primarily in the latter half of the 20th Century, Humanity had its most potent tool to combat bacterial infections. These were called antibiotics. This technology was rendered impotent through a failure on the part of Humanity to understand that some tools cannot, and should not be used as pathway to profit. In the case of antibiotics, enterprising profit seekers discovered that through giving animals antibiotics one could cause them to gain weight more rapidly which could lead to higher profits since animals grown for meat are sold by weight. The application of antibiotics in animal husbandry led to the diminishment of their efficacy in the New Millennium.
From 1779, all the way into the first quarter of the 20th Century, Mesmerism / Animal Magnetism was considered a valid medical practice whose practitioners were known variously as Mesmerists, Magnetizers or Mesmeric Healers. The practice continues today under other names such as Healing Touch, Reiki and Energy Healing. Quimby was part of this movement which had adherents around the world, producing hundreds of books, supported by magazines and journals in multiple languages. It should be understood that Mesmerism / Animal Magnetism was not the same as hypnotism. Whereas hypnotism deals solely with the ability to bring the mind into a state of human consciousness involving focused attention, reduced peripheral awareness and an enhanced capacity for response to suggestion, Mesmerism / Animal Magnetism was a religious and philosophical belief system. This was the reason that Mary Baker Eddy attacked it. Eddy was afraid that the movement from which she gleaned the basics might distract from her creation. Eddy was concerned that Christian Science (Eddyism) was seen as a valid Abrahamic expression that was both unique and superior to what she termed "malicious" Animal Magnetism. Eddy sought to demonstrate the principles she had learned from Quimby while explaining and justifying these principles primarily with Abrahamic Thought. While in the nascent days of Christian Science, Eddy drew upon the Bhagavad Gita and other sacred texts from diverse cultures, she removed those references from later editions of her work Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures.
Adherents to Mesmerism / Animal Magnetism held certain beliefs in common with Spiritualism which was a burgeoning movement that also contributed significantly to New Thought.
Spiritualism is distinguished from New Thought which does not:
"affirm that communication with the so-called dead is a fact, scientifically proven by the phenomena of Spiritualism."
"affirm that the precepts of Prophecy and Healing are Divine attributes proven through Mediumship."
In many other principles, New Thought and Spiritualism are very close in viewpoint. This is why some New Thought folks with a propensity for nonsense teachings find the teachings of Allan Kardec (Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail) so attractive. While the canon of Spiritualist literature extends far beyond Kardec, Kardec's work involved a codification of spiritualist beliefs into a system he called Spiritism. These beliefs were specifically created to address what Rivail felt were shortcomings in Mesmerism / Animal Magnetism. While science offers systems based upon proven principles, people have always loved systems of all kinds, even when those systems are simply the codification of nonsense.
In contrast to nonsense teachings, New Thought focuses on individual empowerment promoting awareness of the higher truths in life. While many New Thought adherents believe in reincarnation, there are other New Thought hypotheses regarding Afterlife. Again, the primary distinction between New Thought and Spiritualism is that New Thought adherents do not generally occupy their consciousness with the afterlife except on those occasions which call for it such as the death of a loved one. While Spiritualists do seances and seek to communicate with the dead, New Thought adherents do not consider such pursuits to be germane to the creation of higher consciousness and some feel that they can in fact be a distraction.
However, it should be understood that many New Thought traditions teach that through regular spiritual practice one can develop ones' latent mystic and psychic abilities. Readers will find this in many books throughout the library such as Ernest Holmes' 1926 version of Science of Mind, not to be confused with Bascom's original 1881 Science of Mind. In Lesson 6, Holmes explores Psychic Phenomena. Holmes was deeply influenced by Thomson Hudson's Law of Psychic Phenomena. It is not uncommon people to develop an affinity for the psychic. This propensity was explored thoroughly by James Randi. The documentary: An Honest Liar is highly recommended.
Maude Allison Lathem removed this lesson when she revised Holmes' version of Science of Mind in 1938. In fact, the main canon of Ernest Holmes work has been extensively adjusted by, mostly female, partners who played an important role in elevating Holmes' Religious Science version of Science of Mind to a higher level.
New Thought 3.1 takes an active stance in restoring the truth of the New Thought movement as a powerful progressive spiritual path. Thomas Picketty made a major contribution with his research into economics. Through Picketty's ground breaking work several key original New Thought concepts have been validated. Picketty clarifies that the essential elements necessary to the maintenance of peace and prosperity in any society are universal health care for all citizens, universal free education for all citizens, universal human rights and ongoing government programs which reallocate funds to insure that all members of society have equal access to opportunity. These principles restore those parts of New Thought essential to the 19th Century founders who were largely comprised of Suffragettes and former Abolitionists. The warped perspective of late 20th Century New Thought is the main reason for the massive shrinkage of this movement. Unfortunately, the movement became increasingly permeated with "profit prophets" who propounded various principles of selfishness abandoning the deeper spiritual principles.
This occurred largely due to ignorance, but was given generous support by those New Thought leaders who found sustenance at the corporate trough. Keep in mind that American New Thought includes Self Improvement Literature which often lionizes individuals who make large amounts of money. Often these individuals see the creation of wealth as a 'zero sum' game. They are extraordinarily afraid of contributing to the societies that provided them with the means to amass large quantities of wealth. These fearful individuals seek power in order to gain security. The American ideals championed throughout World War 2, in which it is understood that people who care about their countries are happy to pay taxes, are something that fearful individuals cannot live up to. The believer in the 'zero sum' game is haunted by the fear that he or she can never make enough money and thus any taxation is deemed destructive.
In contrast to this 'weakling' consciousness stands the powerful consciousness of people like Ben and Jerry, and Arianna Huffington who know that they can empower the people they work with, give them better working conditions, more vacation time and higher wages. The empowered Millionaire is never afraid of taxes and will happily pay 50% because she knows that with her mind and ability she will simply make more millions and by supporting the society she lives in, she safeguards the very freedoms essential to Civil Society. Often these exceptional leaders develop higher consciousness through experiencing more advanced societies such as Sweden, Norway or Austria. These nations operate on the partnership principles explored by Riane Eisle and have thus more fully embodied the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. .
Because both World Wars decimated the New Thought movement around the globe, the movement lost essential contributions from those individuals who were killed in the the holocausts of world war one and two. It has taken over 100 years to restore these essential elements. One should not feel upset with the old New Thought leaders. They were simply following their psycho-social programming. With the advent of the internet, essential texts can be easily read. Today, new leaders are evolving past the useless nonsense and focusing on the the deeper wisdom which provides the foundation for higher consciousness. "All arts and sciences contribute to the greatest art and science and that is the art and science of life."
We see New Thought 3.1 growing around the world and wherever it is growing people are getting stronger. In contrast to advanced societies which have been able to create strong egalitarian foundations, weak societies are trapped within the past paradigm of the 'dominator' principle. New Thought upholds Human Rights and strives for deeper insights which support these rights. This does not mean the automatic elimination of old dominator cultures. Mental illness does not simply vanish without attention.
The greatest challenge is to always remember that wisdom is the result of the combination of knowledge and compassion.
The view that dominates New Thought fundamentalists, that New Thought was spawned from the teachings of Phineas Quimby, arose primarily due to the fact that Phineas Quimby left clock making and watch repair, became an adherent to Mesmerism / Animal Magnetism, developed a traditional Mesmeric practice as a "healer / doctor", and in treating Mary Baker Eddy, inspired her to create Christian Science (Eddyism).
Horatio Dresser's parents also consulted Phineas Quimby and this shared study with Quimby became an effective tool in the ongoing legal battles with Eddy who had a penchant for law suits in order to eliminate views similar to and therefore (in her mind) possibly in competition with her own.
Most New Thought adherents feel that Eddyism should be excluded from the spectrum of New Thought due to the fact that Eddy (like Joseph Smith and Mohammed) promoted the idea that she was a "final prophet." Declaring oneself a final prophet is anathema in New Thought because one of the basic principles is that anyone can use spiritual practices such as:
In conjunction with living in consciousness of our 'oneness with Great Spirit' (DivineUnity), to become a messenger for the divine. New Thought teaches that there can be no final prophet, channel or message because Great Spirit / God / Goddess is omnipresent, eternal and we are one with Great Spirit always. The Divine is always with us, therefore the divine message flows forever; thus it is anathema to believe otherwise.
Higher consciousness is achieved through a progressive realization that DivineUnity (oneness with God) is our deepest and highest truth. One may feel separate from the Divine but in truth, the Divine flows through us always. Thus it follows that as we become more conscious of the truth of our DivineUnity, we progressively move into higher consciousness. It can easily be observed whether a person embodies higher consciousness because he or she believes in gender equality and universal access to health care and education available in that society.
Does this give validity to the expression in Eddyism that "It's all good?" Not really. The fact that the the Unified Field contains all things and all beings and that we are all part of this field does not automatically mean that "It's all good." The ancient teaching explains that just because all Beagles are dogs, does not mean that all dogs are Beagles. It is the same as declaring that "everything is spiritual." Making such declarations simply means the person doing so is unable to discern between what is spiritual and what is not. One would not say that Hitler, Stalin, or Ted Bundy were spiritual, but one would say that Ghandi, Martin Luther King, and Mother Teresa were spiritual. While all beings have spiritual potential, an individual must align with highest good in order to be truly spiritual.
It is one thing to "feel" love, or feel caring about a situation, it is quite another to act loving and demonstrate the truth of that love through action. This is why genuine spiritual teachers relate that we must observe actions to determine truth. Those people who truly care, show us their compassion through their actions. People who simply say they care, might not care at all. One sees such contradictory behavior in politicians all the time. Look to your spiritual leaders actions to determine their quality. While some leaders may talk about supporting human rights, what are they doing to ensure that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is universally upheld locally and globally? Are they living an attitude of gratitude? Or demonstrating lack of appreciation? What is their living truth?
As dynamic spiritual beings having a human experience, we are aware that within the Time-Space Continuum we are only within the NOW. Within this present moment we have the ability to insure that our future is better, regardless of what form it may take. This demands that we see the truth of the 'other' as ourselves. This does not mean we should become passive "bumps on a log." We must embrace behavior and actions that support a healthier, more loving world. This demands that we do not get trapped within the past patterns of belief or actions, which means that we must be life long learners.
We have all known those people who avoid action and participation. They do not stand up for the rights of others, or march to support those rights, but later they act as if they were part of the fight for those rights.
As we grasp the deeper truths, we move into higher awareness. Awareness precedes consciousness. To understand this truth, all one needs to do is visit with a person in a coma. That person is in an apparent state of sleep from which he or she may or may not awake. Now think about how many people alive today are walking around with a similar low state of awareness. In 2016, an entire penguin population died out in Antarctica because global climate chaos gave rise to a unique phenomena in which an iceblock 1000 miles in area blocked their access to the ocean. The film Happy Feet is animated, the documentary March of the Penguins is not. March of the Penguins was made 11 years before the extinction event. How many people are living in lack of awareness? How does this affect you? How does this affect the world?
If one is unable to make such distinctions, it does not mean advanced consciousness, it simply means the person is living in lack. In this case, a lack of good sense and lack of ability to understand the difference between what is good versus what is not. Adherents to Eddyism and other illusionist belief systems believe that if they ignore problems then those problems will go away. This is most apparent with Abrahamic extremists, but it is also a phenomena among Vedic extremists.
A bad translation of 1 Corinthians 2:14:
"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." ~ King James Version (KJV)
gave rise to an odd false dichotomy which supports absurd notions in which being "natural" was considered by some Abrahamics to be a bad thing. Due to such false tautologies, entire cultures have pushed themselves to extraordinary unnatural behaviors giving rise to disastrous results.
Other translations of 1 Corinthians 2:14 include:
"For a beastly man perceiveth not those things that be of the Spirit of God; for it is folly to him, and he may not understand, for it is examined ghostly." ~ Wycliffe Bible (WYC)
"But the unbeliever does not welcome what comes from God’s Spirit, because it is foolishness to him; he is not able to understand it since it is evaluated spiritually." ~ Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
"The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit." ~ New International Version (NIV)
The person of higher consciousness is able to discern that acquainting "natural" with "unspiritual" is ludicrous, but the meager mind is lacking in understanding and thus is unable to comprehend such truth. Today, right now, humanity has the collective technology, wealth and ability to let go of fossil fuels without leaning on nuclear technology. Ask yourself what is preventing this from taking place? Could it be false beliefs? Could it be that some people benefit from promulgating false beliefs? Could it be that in a similar way to the misinterpretation of the above passage, there are other misinterpretations taking place which are leading to even more dangerous errors?
From this particular bad translation came false interpretations which led people astray. One should understand that all languages are equally endowed with the ability to elevate as well as to confuse, whether in translation or not. This is why one hallmark of the great spiritual leader is being a life-long learner. Great spiritual beings are not frozen at a particular level of consciousness; they are happy to find new paradigms that support transcendence to higher consciousness.
Some people have barriers to such transformation. Rigidly clinging to past patterns of belief is the most common barrier. Such behavior is described in the Buddhist story of the swimmer crossing a river who finds a boulder to cling to in the middle of the stream. This boulder seems to be a comfortable respite, but the longer the swimmer clings to the boulder the colder and more weary he becomes. To successfully cross the river, it is best to move forward from one shore to another.
One cannot erase them, one must replace them. The conscious swimmer springs forth from one bank swimming to the other side. This demands leaping from the previous bank, then climbing out of the river onto the other bank. One cannot be on both banks at the same time.
Astute readers will realize that the misinterpretation of 1 Corinthians 2:14 has given rise to quite destructive beliefs based upon delusion. The false dichotomy separating the natural from the spiritual is very destructive. It is responsible for the creation of artificial constructs in the mistaken belief that such means can elevate the believer into higher consciousness. One cannot elevate consciousness through clothing, or through various forms of fascism. Higher consciousness demands freedom to make choices both wrong and right and then individual desire to transcend. This cannot be achieved through totalitarianism of any kind. The dominator paradigm does not support peace and prosperity. This false tautology of the dominator paradigm is giving way to the powerful progressive partnership paradigm explored by Riane Eisler.
The partnership paradigm was a truth recognized by the founders of the United States who were mostly Free Masons. They came together in the face of tyranny, not to fight for the replacement of one form of tyranny with another, but rather to create a "government of the people, by the people, for the people." While the meager mind might believe that it is possible to live in anarchy, or to replace elected government with novel tyrannies such as rule by corporations, those of higher consciousness are already aware of what the word "corporation" means.
The customary term to describe a "body without a soul" is "the living dead." Yet some public figures (in the United States) have in recent times declared: "Corporations are people my friend." Can an entity which is constructed by registering a stack of paper with the state, be a person? Can an entity without a beating heart be a person? Or even alive for that matter?
These absurdities are the reason some cultures around the world are having dreadful challenges. While we can "change our thoughts and thereby change our life," if we are not aware of the truth, then we cannot manifest higher consciousness. While corporations are useful tools, they are only tools and to elevate them to the status of human beings is clearly an error that will bring destructive consequences to societies and cultures that do so. Essentially it is like inviting a vampire or zombie to dinner, those who do so ultimately become the meal.
Unlike Eddyism and other illusionist belief systems. New Thought embraces science and teaches that through training the mind, one can transform his or her life. The reason that Vedic thought became such a potent part of New Thought is due to the fact that the Vedic Yogas are one of the more important Dharmas (spiritual teachings) of the world. If New Thought were merely an Abrahamic teaching, it would have no value because it would simply be another "heresy."
Those who propose that Eddyism be included in the spectrum of New Thought, place Eddy's teaching at the extreme of New Thought fundamentalism which includes forms of Magical Thinking.
At times, classic New Thought authors used various terms interchangeably to reach the widest possible audience. This can be confusing to some contemporary readers. There is increasing clarity regarding these issues. Well read patrons observe a spectrum of New Thought. For the purposes of being inclusive we could include Eddyism within New Thought, thus the New Thought spectrum ranges from:
Mental Science (nontheistic, in some cases atheistic) includes current medical understanding and scientific thought.
Eddyism (theistic) which excludes current medical understanding and scientific thinking
promulgating the view that everything is an illusion and that all the adherent needs is to get right with God.
Once in alignment with God, the adherent can live in a reformed reality.
Ranging between these, we find a vast range of different teachings.
99% of New Thought adherents do not consider Christian Science to be part of the New Thought tradition, yet in some New Thought History Classes certain Mary Baker Eddy books are included in the reading list in order to illuminate what some New Thought Wisdom Holders call "Nonsense Teachings."
Most late 19th Century New Thought teachings found their inspiration within either Abrahamic Thought or Vedic Thought.
Abrahamic Thought is rooted within teachings that refer to Abraham. Abrahamic teachings range from Middle Eastern tribal teachings to teachings from around the Mediterranean and the Americas. Primary forms of Abrahamism include: Judaism, Christianism, Mohammedanism (Islam / Submission) and Mormonism. Each Abrahamic form is differentiated by its books. Each Abrahamic form has one or more books which reveal the mythologies of their form of semetic spiritualism.
New Thought adherents use a vast spectrum of spiritual books. Thus New Thought has a library.
Key principles which determine whether a teaching remains within the current stream of New Thought are:
"Does this teaching agree with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)?" Because today's New Thought adherents recognize that the Universal Declaration of Human is the highest spiritual teaching thus far manifested, it is understood that any teaching which does not agree with the UDHR, is a decadent teaching and must be disgarded.
New Thought is built upon and illucidates Universal Spiritual principles. Valid spiritual principles contribute to well being, happiness and health. Any teaching which does not contribute to these is likewise tossed out. If a teaching is disproved by science, it is thrown out. Any Spiritual Teacher telling you otherwise is simply promulgating nonsense. Some New Thought adherents place emphasis on certain texts showing this preference through referring to certain texts in their lectures (celebration services), writings and teachings. Thus you will find that Buddhist New Thought teachers tend to lean on the Lotus Sutra, while Abrahamic New Thought teachers favor Abrahamic texts such as the Tanakh, the Gospels (including the Gnostic Gospels) and other texts from the four quadrants of Abraham.
Vedic New Thought Thought is rooted within the Vedas, including the Upanishads and Mahabharata. Vedic thought manifests itself in various forms of Hinduism, or Sanātana Dharma which means eternal and universal law or principle that governs everyone irrespective of culture, race, religion, belief and practices.
In the 20th Century New Thought forms arose such as Buddhist New Thought and Taoist New Thought. This supports the Message of New Thought which was described by Abel Allen in 1914:
NEW THOUGHT is not, as many believe, a name or expression employed to define any fixed system of thought, philosophy, or religion, but is a term used to convey the idea of growing or developing thought. In considering this subject, the word "New" should be duly and freely emphasized, because the expression "New Thought" relates only to what is new and progressive.
These forms embody new approaches which are both practical and insightful. Tian of Siam is one of many New Thought leaders promoting Buddhist / Taoist New Thought. While none of Tian's writings are within New Thought Library at this time, we are working with a number of other New Thought leaders to bring illumination to this area within the Canon of New Thought. New Thought Library constantly adds more New Thought texts and media to support your journey while working with participants to enfranchise and empower all spiritual seekers. New Thought is in an eternal process of evolution leading to deeper insights and higher realizations. We work with those teachers who have a compelling interest to empower and enfranchise people everywhere through illuminating the alternatives within the New Thought spiritual path.
Alternate views ascribe the emergence of New Thought to Free Masonry, Deism, Transcendentalism and Spiritualism. One point of view is that New Thought originated with Anne Hutchinson in 1638! Regardless of which view is correct, primary paradigms that differentiate New Thought from old Thought include: Cocreation and the Law of Cause and Effect.
Cocreation is a root paradigm within New Thought which means partnership with the Divine, That That Is, God, Goddess, or name you wish to give to the Divine. Cocreation is a dramatic departure from the BDSM principles within some religions that promulgate the idea that all relationships are or should be based upon Dominance Hierarchy ie submission.
New Thought teaches CoCreation / Networking / Cooperation / Human Rights
old thought teaches Submission / Hierarchy / Authoritarianism / Tyranny
The paradigm of the Law of Cause and Effect is quite different from concept of predestination or destiny.
The fact that old Thought is rooted within what most people would call BDSM principles, while healthy relationships are rooted within the principles of partnership and cocreation, means that we have ongoing work on our respective consciousness while working together to manifest positive progressive change insuring a more compassionate world for our children, all children, and all coming generations. We cannot afford to be passive in our practice. We must be dynamic vessels of compassion working in cocreation. The Law of Cause and Effect means that what we do right now, in this present moment, places a cause into the Time-Space Continuum (Life) which brings about a consequent effect. Thus the past has brought us to the present and within the present we are creating the future. We cannot change the past, but we can change the present.
This is why New Thought is such a powerful path which promotes mediation over conflict. New Thought teaches us to let go of the past and proceed forward in this present moment to manifest a better future right now. Within both the Bible and the Lotus Sutra we find the teaching that those who are committed to the higher spiritual path will experience profound inner and outer transformation. "Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it." ~ Matthew 10:39
New Thought teaches that when we are confronted with those who are trapped in the past or throw the past at us, we release them to their highest good and proceed forward in the present moment on the higher path of empowerment. There is no sense in fighting with folks who are fault finders. It is the nature of life that some parents and friends do not want you to grow or change. This is the real meaning of the biblical passages: Luke 12:53, Matthew 10:21, Matthew 10:35. At times, people who awaken to higher truth must let go of people they love, or loved in the past. New Thought teaches us to simply bless them and go our own way. If one encounters a troll who thows old stuff at you, remember that this person is simply living out an ancient archetype in which primates flung feces at those they felt to be superior to themselves.
In New Thought we work upon ourselves. Emmet Fox taught us to share the good news of New Thought with all kinds of people remembering the Abrahamic teaching: "...scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times." ~ Mark 4:4
Those people who are ready to transcend past patterns will hear the good news of New Thought and like yourself will begin a process of awakening and consequent empowerment. New Thought folks are life long learners who are in the process of weaving a Universal Matrix of Understanding which enables them to have a deeper understanding of life. Instead of projecting their beliefs upon the world, New Thought adherents are actively seeking and gaining deeper insights through this way of living. There are others who will never be able to hear the truth because they are trapped within past patterns they are not yet ready to transcend. Loving children look to their parents for guidance when they are young, but when they arrive at adulthood they learn to make their own decisions. This does not mean they do not love their parents. They are simply letting go of the consciousness of dependence. This understanding is expressed in 1 Corinthians 13: "when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things."
This is why it is so important to be loving with your parents and elders. There is no sense to get angry with them about the fact that they harbor views which are anachronistic. Simply smile, hug them when possible and move forward in consciousness. When visiting any Spiritual Community observe the present actions of the Spiritual Leadership. Do not make the mistake of the "fault finders" and look at the past. This is the meaning of the verse: "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." ~ Luke 9:62 Those people who wish to be involved in creative service are not trolls. We are all aware of the trolls who seek to obfuscate the truth through destructive activities. This is why they are not fit for Divine Service.
"If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will." ~ Frederick Douglass
With the advent of new forms of terrorism emanating from the 3rd quadrant of Abraham, global attention has been drawn to the teaching that "the greatest struggle is the internal struggle." There is no doubt that this is true and that higher realization is not assisted through totalitarianism of any kind. Through the process of cocreation, people can create a more compassionate world "which works for everyone." This does not occur through passive acceptance of what is, or avoidance of challenges. Evolution is always better than Revolution. This is why we must work together for the realization of the higher truth which is manifested within the highest spiritual document the world has ever produced: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We cannot and dare not shirk our responsibility to insure that throughout the world the self evident spiritual truth of the rights of all people are recognized: Freedom of Thought, Freedom of Opinion, Equal opportunity to higher education, health care as a right, etc....
The dawn of the New Millennium ushered in changes in parts of the world which are already having regressive repercussions. Turkey is a prime example of destructive political regression. Those who are unfamiliar with the history of Turkey may be unaware that World War 1 brought 500 years of Ottoman Imperial rule to an end. Under the leadership of Ataturk, a modern secular Turkey was created. Ataturk set Turkey on the path to positive change so that one day all citizens would be able to fully express themselves without fear of oppression. For the first time, the regular people of Turkey were freed from the slavery of the Ottoman Turks and the ongoing and consistent violation of their Human Rights. It has been a struggle for Turks to retain the freedoms gained under Ataturk. Forces of Anachronism within Turkey have worked hard to destroy the gains made by the Divine Force of freedom and Human Rights within Turkey. Although Erdogan has been able to raise the GDP of Turkey beyond Saudi Arabia, one can observe that he has become progressive drunk with power and through this inebriation he threatens both this prosperity and the respect that Turkey gained in the 20th Century. In some ways, he is like King Midas whose touch turns things to gold. In the beginning it is great, but in the end, he destroys the things he loves most. Erdogan shows his weakness most through his persecution of minorities and prosecution of journalists. The most hilarious illustration of his basic personal weakness is when he gets upset when comediens make fun of him. For a period of time, Erdogan seemed like a strong leader who was creating a more prosperous and stronger Turkey, but then his personal weaknesses began showing. Erdogan's recent murder of Kurds threatens to destroy the progress made by the Turkish people bringing back the darkness that characterized the Ottoman empire. Some people have noticed the similarity between Erdogan's style of speaking with Mussolini and Hitler, whereas others have noticed that Erdogan seems like an American Christian Televangelist. At a point in time in which the Turkish people would benefit from outside support noticing the steady destruction of civil rights, Merkel gives blind support to what appears to be an emerging dictator who seeks to corrupt the very constitution created by Ataturk. Is Erdogan exploiting the migrants as a weapon? If Erdogan cannot be trusted by his own people to continue the great legacy of Ataturk, can he be trusted by other nations?
I hid my eyes
I stayed silent
I burn all my embers Aah...
Still they don't burn out
I stay thinking only of you
During the first few years of the 21st Century, new leadership in Turkey increased prosperity, but then Erdogan began leading that great nation astray from the higher path of empowerment which Ataturk put into the place after World War One. Can Erdogan regain his stature? Or will he only be remembered as a leader who brought a period of prosperity followed by decades of darknesss? During the latter half of the 20th Century Turkey was primarily a positive influence within the region but recent events demonstrate clearly that the policies of Ataturk have been put aside resulting in repeat performances of the behavior of the early 20th Century which included the genocide of over 1.5 million Turkish citizens.
Harnessing the power of the state to incease prosperity, then turning that power against the institutions of Turkish Civil Society is a short term strategy. It is good to build prosperity but foolist to destroy the firm foundations built by successive Turkish leaders since October 29th, 1923. Whereas Ataturk taught "Peace at Home, Peace in the World" and began a process leading to Turkey being a key power within the Middle East, Erdogan appears to be bent on destroying Ataturk's achievement, all while placing Ataturk's picture in a prominent place upon his walls. Whereas Ataturk built thousands of new schools providing free primary education to all citizens, Erdogan appears to want to destroy this system through a clever new 4+4+4 system which encourages students to drop out early. New laws pushed into being by Islamists allow parents to home school children after the first four years of primary education. Parents in rural and decadent parts of the country have been increasingly preventing girls from attending school after those first four years. This is leading to a downward spiral throughout Turkey foreshadowing a coming period of conflict. A founding partner of the OECD in 1961, Turkey was the only nation from the near east / middle east to qualify for membership. For 40 years it made steady progress in empowering its citizens through education until 2011. Statistics from 2012 are showing a rise in dropouts which will eventually lead to a downturn in prosperity. While Ataturk chose the to empower ALL citizens understanding the importance of insuring that women are given equal civil and political rights, is Erdogan intent upon destroying the very progress and prosperity that he ushered in? Drastically destructive policies of "regime change" in the Middle East have regressed every area in which such "regime changes" have taken place. In the 20th Century, an alliance was created to restore the monarchy of Kuwait after an invasion by Iraq. Experienced leaders were careful to avoid toppling the regime of Sadam Hussein being aware of the importance of maintaining a balance of power within the region in order to prevent the chaos which has ensued since the second invasion under the auspices of looking for fictitious 'weapons of mass destruction.' The toppling of Quadaffi's government brought wide spread chaos to Libya resulting in the fulfillment of predictions voiced by Quadaffi. This was simply a continuance of the policies of President Chaney who ruled the U.S. through 'baby' Bush. These were the same policies adopted by President Clinton in the late 20th Century.
Strong spiritual leaders are apprised of what is going on within their spiritual communities, their local geographic communities and around the globe. While it is ok for followers to 'turtle', it is essential that spiritual leaders are aware and conscious. Spiritual leaders must apprise themselves of actualities instead of dwelling within points of view. This requires awareness leading to consciousness and then thoughtfulness leading to insights that deepen understanding. This is how we manifest paradigm shifts that support positive progressive solutions.
Spiritual leaders are tasked with encouraging positive progressive change within the world which supports adherence to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This is the essential paradigm which elevates the discourse away from the internecine conflicts between the various quadrants within the compass of Abrahamic thought. New Thought offers a powerful path that supports peace and prosperity throughout the world through compassionate action.
All healthy parents desire a better future for their children. This is what is means to be progressive. Being progressive is not a term of the right or left. In fact, the progressive movement was founded conservative monarchists who became increasingly aware that positive progressive change results in happier people who are more likely to support the current king or queen. Healthier populations are happier and when people are better educated, their societies are able to maintain prosperity. Education and Health are the two essential ingredients for cultures and societies within those cultures to maintain ongoing peace and prosperity.
After World War 2, civil societies around the world discovered key principles that are necessary to the promotion of peace and prosperity. Sadly, outside of a few advanced societies which us the partnership paradigm as the basis of their culture, large portions of the populations of some industrialized nations feel increasingly disempowered and disenfranchised. Corporate control of media has pushed this belief further because fear appears to sell more products.
The Message of New Thought described by Abel Allen in 1914, is a message of spiritual empowerment. This is the heart of New Thought. New Thought will always include prosperity principles, yet it is important to discern which principles are truth principles and which are simply promoting selfishness.
Years ago, a businessman asked for consultation with the goal of gaining insight into why he was having problems promoting his sandwich shop. During the initial meeting he spoke about how he couldn't find any good workers who would perform to his standards. He spoke about how "people these days don't have a work ethic" etc... etc.... His competition was outperforming him and he couldn't understand why because he had studied their menus and added many of their dishes to his own menu. When mystery shoppers were sent to his restaurant, they observed that he was always nagging his workers. He would insult them in front of customers, even demonstrating how he could make menu items better while telling them how incompetent they were. Yet all the items the owner cooked were sub par in comparison with his competition. After the exploration and research period was over, it was apparent that his real problem was poor leadership. He was unable to inspire his employees to perceive his vision and feel that they were part of a team with hope for a better future. Workers were asked to confidentially express their feelings about their futures with his company. They unanimously expressed that when they started working for him they did so with the hope of one day becoming a franchise operator. When asked about their feelings in the present moment, they shared that as soon as they could find a position elsewhere they would move on with the knowledge they had acquired to prosper elsewhere.
While social enfranchisement does not necessarily translate to spiritual empowerment, it has prompted a universal global transformation which will continue as long as the technological platform is in place. This is the nature of technological progress. In the 1960's Star Trek featured "communicators" and computers that operated with voice commands. What began in the imagination of Science Fiction writers became the reality of today. Essential freedoms are necessary for the production of such television shows. Article 18: Freedom of Thought and Article 19: Freedom of Opinion are part of those essential freedoms.
The first episode of Star Trek was produced in 1966. This was only 6 years after the closure of one of the darkest episodes in American history which had resulted in the Hollywood Blacklist. This period was characterized by a blatant disregard of essential freedoms articulated in both the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the U.S. Bill of Rights. It was only when Dalton Trumbo was publicly credited as the writer of both Exodus and Spartacus in 1960 that this era came to an end.
Would Civil Rights legislation have been possible if those dark days had not been brought to a conclusion? It is human nature to be passive and quiet in the face of oppression. People don't want to get hurt by the trolls and pols who are looking for an opportunity through disempowering others. This is why The Message of New Thought is so important to the world today. There will always be people who will use spirituality as a path to power for themselves instead of a vehicle for the empowerment of all people. It is up to each of us to develop a spiritual practice that support inward transformation. It is up to us together to cocreate a more compassionate world which produces positive progressive change that empowers all of our children.
Part of the mission of New Thought library is to archive all public domain New Thought, metaphysical works and works of science insuring the preservation of these works in multiple media's that can be accessed universally by all peoples as a multilingual public resource contributing to the spiritual well being and enlightenment of all humanity.
The library is primarily maintained and expanded by our Master Librarian, and other wonderful volunteers. Sometimes called the Volunteer in Chief, Avalon designed the library and created innovative techniques to process public domain books into a variety of useful formats, concluding with audio rendering to insure access by the visually impaired.
There are a number of wonderful online archives throughout the web. This archive has a theme and a focus to support your spiritual growth and joyful living.
Volunteers are given valuable training in the latest electronic library sciences as well as mentorship in other areas. We do grant certificates and degrees. These qualifications are theological, spiritual degrees that require the seeker to both work in the library and create original contributions to our world's knowledge with particular emphasis on the "Universal Matrix of Understanding" as well as demonstrate mastery of New Thought Spiritual practices including understanding compassionate action.
We welcome you to join us. Apply Now!
Once processed texts are generally sent to physical library / institutions which are registered with us. Registration is a process which begins with a formal request and then proceeds through an invitation etc... We welcome partners with positive intentions and Open Access values.
This guarantees their preservation and universal access by distributing duplicate copies around the world. The goal of this project is to make all Public Domain New Thought Texts universally available for all time. "We are working to insure that Public Domain New Thought Texts are as common and accessible as the King James Bible."
We are also working on similar sites in other languages. When this was simply a links site, some of you wrote to us in the past when links stopped working. Sometimes a particular person or group serves a text and then for some reason stops doing so.
We create and maintain back up copies of all Public Domain New Thought books to insure their preservation for your continued access to these texts. If a responsible server goes down or ceases to serve a Public Domain book or makes it inaccessible or creates barriers to access, if your have submitted those texts to this archive, we will serve it.
Whenever you see this graphic, it means there is a class offered in this subject or that uses this book.
Our founders included the creator of the largest U.S. Theater Collection archived outside of the United States.
We believe strongly that archives of physical texts must be created in several geographically distinct areas with special regard to climate control in order to insure their long term survival in the event of climactic, geographic, social or political upheaval. Recent events in the U.S. demonstrate increasing social tension and a rising possibility of political crisis. Without a living wage, regular Americans are not able to maintain a standard of living. As Barbara Ehrenreich's research for her book Nickel and Dimed clearly demonstrated, an increasing number of Americans live in "pods" in order to make ends meet. Many U.S. elites seem to have lost any sense of noblesse oblige. Police are being increasingly armed with military weaponry and there is a rising tide of violence against regular citizens. Law Enforcement violence against citizens has been most notable in its targeting of men of color across the nation, yet police have not withheld violence from whites. Sadly, those tasked with enforcement of the law appear to enjoy immunity from the very laws they are supposed to enforce. Since 1982, there is an increasing economic chasm between the wealthy ownership class and regular working men and women. The ability for average Americans to get an education has been greatly limited with the absurd rise in tuition costs even at the Land Grant Universities established by the Morrill Act of 1862. "A land grant university is a people’s university. While early universities were developed in Medieval Europe to educate a courtly society in the arts, land grant universities were created in 19th century America to help a populist society build and feed a new nation. To do this, Americans needed a liberal and practical education for everyone, not just the wealthy or the socially elite. 'The fundamental idea was to offer an opportunity in every State for a liberal and larger education to larger numbers, not merely to those destined to sedentary professions, but to those much needing higher instruction for the world’s business, for the industrial pursuits and professions of life.'" -- James R. Fischer, PhD
All of these factors support the argument that the most dramatic political crises and consequent breakdowns come when least expected but in hindsight one could have seen the signs on the side of the road leading to the crisis. Let us hope that leaders throughout the nation awaken to higher values and meet the deeper needs of the American people.
New Thought has always been a powerful tool within business. Perhaps because a person cannot move ahead in any endeavor unless one is positive and believes he or she can succeed. Another crucial principle for ultimate and lasting success is the principles of interdependent co-arising. The earth's present situation demonstrates the dramatic importance of science and ethical behavior. One can trace the dramatic decline of ethics in business to the 1980's when the American values of democracy were trumped by siren call of profit margins. Actual pensions were replaced by 401k's and the two way loyalty between labor and management was replaced by "every man for himself."
This strange detour away from American values of democracy and social responsibility did not come out of the blue. If we reach back into history to 1939, the entire world joined together to fight Fascism (Rule by corporations with support by government). The "Greatest Generation" of the United States had emerged from the Depression with a new understanding of the importance of balance between Labor and Management, then fought for the rights of all humanity to live in peace and produce prosperity by applying these principles. In 1948, the entire world came together to create and affirm the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and people around the globe were inspired by the United States which was often looked to as the finest example of what people living in freedom could produce.
After defeating Imperial Japan, Mussolini and Hitler, cracks within the system due to unresolved issues such as Jim Crow were mainly ignored during the decade after the Second World War. Europe healed and the United States relaxed into a complacent happiness. With little or no international competition, the USA enjoyed a temporary economic boom accompanied by unprecedented waste. The Cold War ensued and soon the entire nation was building bomb-shelters in preparation for World War 3.
The House Un-American Activities Committee, originally created in 1938 to uncover citizens with Nazi ties, turned into a tool of politicians on the extreme right to investigate the meaning of theater plays. The stupidity of this ridiculous and dangerous precedent was epitomized by Joe Starnes, a right wing Representative from Alabama, who displayed an ignorance so profound that it made him famous. Starnes asked Hallie Flanagan whether the Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe was a member of the Communist Party, then went on to accuse "Mr. Euripides" of preaching class warfare. This insanity continued into the 1950's, then finally declined, being recognized as the "most un-American thing in the country" by former President Truman. Victims of this unique form of terrorism had no chance to clear their names, no chance to get another job and often lost all friends due to their fears of being victimized themselves. (Since this was written a wonderful film was released called Trumbo which accurately depicts this era)
In 1960 Ernest Holmes died peacefully, his twilight years filled with joy and a perfect partnership with William Hornaday. Holmes had some amazing and wonderful writing partners and partners in his ministry including Maude Allison Lathem and Amy Smith. The 1960's brought new industrial competitors to the world stage, while the New Thought writings of Dale Carnegie and Norman Vincent Peale lifted the spirits of hard working, isolated salesmen throughout the United States. Religious Science expanded steadily with people coming to the United States from as far away as South Africa to become practitioners and then ministers of Religious Science. Pittsburgh was booming, the Steel belt was shiny and well oiled. Detroit was the place to be with Motown cranking out the hits that boomed from car radios around the nation. Innovation no longer seemed as necessary as marketing. After all America had won World War 2. By the end of the decade, an American had walked on the moon.
The 1970's opened with Motown moving to LA (Los Angeles) marking the end of the Motown Era. Two years in, Nixon was re-elected. Two years more and he resigned. A year after that, the Vietnam "war" came to an end shattering the myth of American invincibility. But this defeat was drowned with the deafening tones of disco music, buried under episodes of Barney Miller, with the additional distraction of unprotected sex, low grade weed, uppers, downers and all around debauchery. Some were lucky enough to be rescued from swimming pools before they drowned, then suddenly the 70's were over and "Greed was Good."
The 1980's provided a perfect cast of international characters to presage and predict the puerile patterns of the politics of corruption that would characterize the decade. Brezhnev died in 1982, practically on cue. A year of Andropov, a year of Chernenko, then the final leader of the Soviet came upon the stage. AIDS and how that crisis was handled was the perfect metaphor for the corruption of the 1980's. Beginning with Debategate which provided a fearful candidate named Ronald Reagan with an election briefing book stolen from United States President Jimmy Carter, the ensuing decade was punctuated by a plethora of scandals: HUD, Wedtech, Keating, Inslaw, Sewergate and more were crowned with the Iran Contra scandal. Iran Contra marked the first time corrupt Americans were able to reach deep enough into democratic tradition to violate the principles of the Magna Carta. The United States was afflicted with a disease from the top down. It was the American people who paid the price. The statistics from 1982 on betray a slow and painful decline of the fortunes of the majority of Americans. This time the pain was mitigated by cocaine which had become the drug of choice for those living the "high life." It was a drug that could induce dramatic highs that made the user feel invincible. Ultimately generating a sociopathic psychosis, the drug was a perfect match for those who took delight in destructive behavior. After the high, there was of course a deep downside. Under the guise of "Voodoo Economics" deemed "Trickle Down Theory," the fascist economic theories championed by Milton Friedman were put into effect both inside and outside of the United States. The largest wealth transfer in American history had begun. Average Americans saw the buying power of their paychecks decline while corporate profits rose. The term "Gold Parachute" was coined.
The 1980's and 1990's were the Golden Age of late 20th Century New Thought which had firmly hitched its wagon to the Prosperity Gospel. If you were a victim of downsizing, it was your fault. The banner bearers of this New Thought form that heavily emphasized prosperity without responsibility marveled at how their philosophy had permeated the nation to the point that it seemed that even fundamentalist TV Evangelists were pitching their principles using the same quotes from the bible they used at celebration services. In the early 1990's a New Thought minister in Albuquerque proudly proclaimed that the children in Sao Paolo were poor and hungry because they had "poverty consciousness." It had now devolved to the point that children were responsible for their own starvation and Roosevelt was being maligned by some ignorant and unpatriotic citizens as a "communist." This type of slander was simply shrugged off, even though Stalin would have laughed along with these new Prophets of Prosperity. Stalin or Hitler would have been delighted if any American were so stupid and unpatriotic as to slander Roosevelt. Fascists and communists around the globe take special delight when Americans and the American media ridicule their presidents. While they take their most delight when American media is disrespectful to seated presidents, they are also quite happy when Americans make fun of Roosevelt's physical challenges. It is sad that such things take place when Roosevelt was obviously one of America's greatest presidents and his physical disabilities never stopped him from doing a fine job with wisdom and strength. It's the brains, not the brawn which determines a great president. Just look at the debacle of the White House during the first presidency of the 21st Century!
The 1990's furnished the world with a novel cast of characters, along with solid confirmation that the duopoly characterizing American politics were both firmly in the right wing of politics. The "New Democrats" firmly planted their feet on the right side of the political spectrum and while the economy had the largest peacetime expansion in history, this appeared to be of little value to average Americans. Ross Perot summed up the situation perfectly when he said: "We've shipped millions of jobs overseas, and we have a strange situation because we have a process in Washington where after you've served for a while you cash in and become a foreign lobbyist, make 30,000 a month, then work on presidential campaigns, make sure you develop good contacts and then go back out. Now if you just want to get down to brass tacks, the first thing you ought to do is tell all these folks who have got these one way trade agreements negotiated over the years and say fellows we'll take the same deal we gave you and they'll grid lock at that point because for example we've got international competitors who simply could not unload their cars off the ships if they had to comply. You see, if it was a two way street they just couldn't do it. We have got to stop sending jobs overseas. To those of you in the audience who are business people, it's pretty simple, you are paying 12, 13, 14 dollars an hour to factory workers, and you can move your factory south of the border, pay a dollar an hour for labor, hire young workers, assume you have been in business for a long time and you have a mature work force. Pay a dollar an hour for your labor, have no health care, that's the single most expensive element in making a car. Have no environmental controls, no pollution controls, and no retirement, and you don't care about anything but making money, there will be a giant sucking sound going south. So if the people send me to Washington, the first thing I will do is study that 2000 page agreement and make sure it is a two way street. Anyway, I decided i was dumb and didn't understand it, so I called the who's who of folks that have been around it and said why won't everybody, everybody go south? They said we'll be disrupted for 12 to 15 years, so I asked: "how does it stop being disruptive? And that is when their jobs come up from a dollar an hour to six dollars an hour and ours go down to six dollars and hour, then it's level again. In the meantime, you've wrecked the country with these kind of deals. We gotta cut it out."
History verified the truth of Perot's prophecy with the caveat that once Mexican salaries had risen, those jobs were shipped to Asia. Bill Clinton signed NAFTA, then American wages stagnated, Pittsburgh, Detroit and an entire swath of the country turned into the Rust belt. At the onset of the 1990's, the Business Roundtable (an organization representing America's big corporations) stated: "corporations are chartered to serve their shareholders and society as a whole." By the end of the 1990's the Business Roundtable had changed the message to: "the notion that the board [of any company] must somehow balance the interests of other stakeholders fundamentally misconstrues the role of the directors."
The 1990's came to an end and the New Millennium began: The U.S. Supreme Court took the election out of the hands of the people pronouncing President Bush the first president of the 21st Century. President Bush's first year was marked by the biggest terrorist attack ever inflicted on American soil making him responsible for the biggest failure in National Defense in American History. His closing year was likewise marked with the biggest financial failure in American history since the great depression. The first years of the New Millennium were characterized by what is best called "puffery." Greenspan puffed up the economy and Bush bragged that the mission was completed with the war barely begun. But the end of the decade, America had a new president who inherited a destroyed economy, an unnecessary war, and an international reputation that might never be repaired. Bush's abrogation of the carefully negotiated SALT and START treaties between the United States and the Soviet Union meant the Russians who inherited those agreements were not longer bound by their terms.
In 2014, the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances protecting Ukraine was abandoned by the major parties to the agreement: the Russian Federation, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom. According to the memorandum, Russia, the U.S., and the UK confirmed, in recognition of Ukraine becoming party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and in effect abandoning its nuclear arsenal to Russia, that they would: 1. Respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty and the existing borders. Some Ukrainian politicians have already said that giving up the 3rd largest stockpile of nuclear weapons was a mistake because the treaty was not upheld by any of the guarantors.
New Thought in 2012 had not grown in percentages from where the movement had been in 1912. In fact, from 1996 to 2016, attendance at New Thought Centers has dropped by 49%. Surveys through the FindACenter directory system and New Thought Library revealed that New Thought adherents were increasingly disenchanted by their leaders flogging their Prosperity Gospels. Religious Science centers always found retention of membership challenging. Now "due to a failure to thrive" the two largest Religious Science organizations amalgamated into one new organization calling themselves "Center for Spiritual Living" but this solution did not resolve their problems. Sathya Sai Baba (who had been the object of worship for some in the past) was barely in the grave when innovative Religious Science ministers began touting a new guru as the solution. American leaders (including a yank who had found a new roost in Edmonton, Canada) felt they had found the answer in Theosophy and John of God. Ushering in a new era in Religious Science, they called themselves "spiritual entrepreneurs" as they purchased fancy John of God Crystal beds and imported them from Brazil. Sathya Sai Baba had declared himself the reincarnation of Sai Baba in 1940, but what excited Religious Science leadership was his ability to manifest ashes. Brazilian Healer John of God. was different from the Indian Guru of the Ashes. John of God states: ""I do not cure anybody. God heals, and in his infinite goodness permits the Entities to heal and console my brothers. I am merely an instrument in God's divine hands". This was music to the ears of these innovative Spiritual Entrepreneurs who began staking their bets on the belief that the crystal beds could do the job of healing from a distance (at a reasonable price). John of God's teachings might differ from the teachings of Ernest Holmes, but perhaps that was not important. Combining the Crystal Beds with CD's and DVD's of Wayne Dyer held promise of a financial resurrection for those ministers who had a need to manifest "Prosperity Consciousness."
In contrast to this new crop of crystal healers, New Thought appears to be blossoming in new forms that hold more appeal to the generation Z portion of the Millennials. A New Thought with heart and soul which includes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This New Thought of the New Millennium combines the full spectrum of New Thought from its inception through today, empowering practitioners through the Universal Matrix of Understanding to live through the SOUL, or Science Of Unified Life. Reaffirming the New Thought embrace of Science, this New Thought form is promising. We are watching and reporting.
This New Thought does not tout the couch, or pad on the floor as the place to get things done, but appears to takes its cue from Rev. Terry McBride who once said: "Whereas the Eastern Guru is content to sit on the hill as the world goes round, the Western Guru rises from his meditation, descends into the valley and works with the people to bring healing and insights to society."
One can observe a steady balkanization in the United States which has led to a bickering abandonment of what is good for the children. Some people appear to begrudge their neighbor's good preferring lower wages for others rather than fighting for higher wages for all. There seems to be loss of perspective and a perspective of loss that is replacing the higher vision of a nation with opportunity for all. Instead of solving problems with solutions that are technologically available there is a tendency to look for a scapegoat. The desire to stop "Waste, Fraud and Abuse" has been replaced with a desire to cover up the truth and prosecute those who report the problems. These are symptoms of a deep wound that is festering. A country cannot grow wealthy by failing to continue the upgrade of infrastructure and the development of new resources. The most important resource is the populace. Thomas Picketty has developed new insights that cannot be denied. They reinforce an ancient wisdom much discussed by the founding fathers of the United States.
"I feel... an ardent desire to see knowledge so disseminated through the mass of mankind that it may, at length, reach even the extremes of society: beggars and kings." --Thomas Jefferson: Reply to American Philosophical Society, 1808.
"The cornerstone of democracy rests on the foundation of an educated electorate." - Thomas Jefferson
"I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power." --Thomas Jefferson to W. Jarvis, 1820.
"The information of the people at large can alone make them the safe as they are the sole depositary of our political and religious freedom." --Thomas Jefferson to William Duane, 1810.
These reasons stated by Thomas Jefferson are why Boko Haram has the name it does. Jefferson owned a Koran and read extensively in all subjects including all religions he could research. Mahasattvas do not limit themselves. They are not content to be ignorant. Those of great wisdom are life long learners. They are not content to dwell within constraints of any kind with regard to the acquisition of wisdom. Jefferson did not view any religion as better than any other. He held a strict view of how the freedom of humanity is a fragile thing that necessitates a solid and impermeable separation of church and state.
