give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid.
17 Shew me a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou, LORD, hast holpen me, and comforted me.
The relation between “God,” the spirit, and “the soul.” It rejoices the soul (verse 4) and de-livers the soul from “hell “ (verse 13), i.e., the “hell “of the soul’s own making, not God’s making.
The spirit answers those who call to it (verses 5 to 7) and it can therefore teach us the Way, or Law, of its own nature and use (verse 11). Its nature is “full of compassion” (verse 15). “Unite my heart” (verse 11) perhaps points to sectional personalities. The spirit gives Its own strength to us (verse 16) by becoming us. We do not have to work all this; God does it alone (verse 10).
Psalm 87
HIS foundation is in the holy mountains.
2 The Lord loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
3 Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah.
4 I will make mention of Rallab and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there.
