A System of Universal Principles
In this chapter I shall endeavour to give a connected idea of the general scope and purpose of the Master's teachings, the point of which we in great measure miss by taking particular sayings separately, and so losing the force which pertains to them by reason of the place they hold in his system as a whole. For, be it remembered, Jesus was teaching a definite system --- not a creed, nor a ritual, nor a code of speculative ethics, but a system resulting from the threefold source of spiritual inspiration, intellectual reasoning, and experimental observation, which are the three modes in which the Universal Mind manifests itself as Conscious Reasoning Power or "the Word". And therefore this system combines the religious, philosophical, and scientific characters, because it is a statement of the action of universal principles at the level where they find expression through the human mind.
As we proceed, we shall find that the basis of this system is the same perception of the unity between the Expressor and the Expressed which is also the
