the Science of Mind and Spirit
by
Ernest Holmes
Ernest Holmes' immortal classic Science of Mind was the second version of Science of Mind to be produced. The first Science of Mind by metaphysical philosopher John Bascom is also in the public domain. Bascom was a key influence in the early New Thought movement. Bascom's works: natural Theology and New Theology are the best vehicles to illuminates his ideas.
Within this early Ernest Holmes version of Science of Mind are important keys to understanding his overall work. It is a wonderful work which is pure Ernest Holmes.
Around the world this 1927 version of Holmes work has become more popular than Maude Allison Latham's later 1938 revision. Latham was essential to the evolving vision of the Holmes brothers. Latham felt strongly that it was time to emphasize the mystic devoid of the psychic. This served as a better vehicle for the propagation of the Religious Science form of Science of Mind style New Thought.
You will notice a tendency to conflate the various forms of New Thought within all of the Holmes' brothers works. Thus they will mention Mental Science, then Science of Mind, then Divine Science almost interchangeably. Yet if there were no differences within New Thought, then there would not be different paths within the movement.
