Where did the darkness go? It did not go anywhere because it was not; it did not exist. It was simply the lack of something, and when the lack was filled there was no longer any lack. So with all negations, with all that is not good, not light, not love, not health, not wholeness. They are each and every one the absence of the Real, and they are all annihilated or healed by letting in a Something, a real Substance which fills full the vacuum.

Remembering that the things which are seen are the temporal, the unreal which pass away, while the things which are not seen are the eternal, the real, let us carry this thought of the no thing a little further. Unhappiness is not a reality because it is not eternal; it belongs in the category of things which pass away. Envy, selfishness, jealousy, fear, and so forth are not real entities in our lives. Each is a lack of love, their positive opposite. Lack of temporal goods, lack of health, lack of wisdom, none of these things belong to the kingdom of the real because they are all temporal things which will, as the philosopher Epictetus said, "pass away." Nothing is real except the
